Starfield COEX Mall Overwhelms with Giant Library
It is no coincidence that Seoul attracts visitors to return again and again. Not only is it the capital of the largest economy in Asia-Pacific, Seoul is also home to vibrant art exhibition spaces all year round, contributing to adding cultural depth to the travel experiences of visitors here.
Every destination is a history book
The National Museum of Korea is truly a model of a comprehensive museum. It is well worth spending a day wandering through the vast spaces displaying numbered national treasures, many large-scale royal paintings and daily life paintings from many dynasties. A historical record of the Korean peninsula is illustrated with images and objects with detailed annotations. The museum is designed completely modern, attracting many young people to visit. Each exhibition area has video screens for interaction and to meet the needs of visitors. Next door is the Korean War Memorial Museum, which stands as a symbol to illuminate the history of events that shaped the peninsula in the 20th century.
Seoul, also known as Hanseong in Chinese characters, still retains the names of landmarks that mark the boundaries of the ancient citadel. In addition to Gwanghwamun (Gwanghwamun) - the main gate to Gyeongbokgung Palace (the largest palace), there were 8 city gates, of which 6 remain today. Among them, Dongdaemun History and Culture Park, named after the East Gate, is located in the Dongdaemun Design Center building designed by famous architect Zaha Hadid, with a futuristic style that simulates the dynamic structure of liquid. Seoul's modern landscape still makes room for reminders of the past, where cultural stories are the main connector.
The capital of South Korea harmoniously combines modernity and tradition.
Every space is a visual reward
The careful and systematic preservation of Koreans is not just about the ancient shell, but also about the way the contents are brought to life. Seoul now emerges as a place where international exhibitions are constantly taking place.
Around the historic center of Seoul, there are large-scale museums such as the MMCA (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Seoul), the Seoul Museum of Art, or the Museum of Contemporary History. In particular, leading Korean businesses are also competing to establish their own art museums. The strong investment in art by large corporations, along with the support of foundations, has contributed to creating a massive art collection with many works by world- famous artists right in Korea, making Seoul an attractive destination for international exhibitions.
Located next to the trendy Itaewon district, Samsung’s Leeum Museum of Art is ranked among the top three largest private art museums in Korea. The museum includes exhibitions of traditional and contemporary artifacts. The futuristic nature of the complex ensures that centuries-old Korean ceramic treasures are harmoniously present alongside modern works and innovative installations. When I visited, an exhibition of contemporary Asian artists was taking place in the temporary exhibition area, including works by a Vietnamese female artist, Arlette Quynh-Anh Tran. Multimedia works immerse viewers in a dreamlike world, as digital technology adds wings to multi-layered perception.
Seoul is home to vibrant art exhibition spaces all year round.
When the library is the hottest destination
The Starfield COEX Mall, renovated in 2014, is a stunning library. It houses 50,000 books and 600 magazines, displayed on wooden bookshelves up to 13 meters high. Reading areas have individual reading lights, comfortable chairs, and are surrounded by food courts. Koreans’ passion for reading is evident in many public spaces such as shopping malls and cafes. The interest in promoting books, especially Korean literature, has brought about remarkable results, such as the recent Nobel Prize in Literature for writer Han Kang.
The sheer scale of Seoul’s cultural scene is palpable. The vibrancy of the place makes exploring Korea a busy and exciting experience to the very end. The modernity of the contemporary finds its way into the ancient, making the journey a gift.
