A new installment in the Top Gun franchise is being planned by Tom Cruise with Paramount, a person close to the project told CNN .
The film is reportedly in development, with plans underway for a sequel, following 2022's Top Gun: Maverick and 1986's Top Gun .
Top Gun: Maverick Reaches Nearly $1.5 Billion in Global Box Office Revenue
CNN said the idea is to reunite the producers of the blockbuster series Top Gun including Tom Cruise, Jerry Bruckheimer and director Joseph Kosinski. The film will be a sequel to Top Gun: Maverick . In addition to Cruise, stars Miles Teller and Glen Powell may also return to star in this part.
The script is not yet complete, but a first draft is being developed by screenwriter Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote Top Gun: Maverick , the source added.
Paramount declined to comment. Representatives for Tom Cruise also did not respond to CNN 's request for comment.
Jennifer Connelly and Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick
The development of a sequel is not entirely surprising, given the huge success of Top Gun: Maverick . It was the most profitable blockbuster of Tom Cruise's career, grossing nearly $1.5 billion worldwide and earning six Oscar nominations, including best picture and best adapted screenplay. The film won an Oscar for sound.
News of Top Gun 3 comes after CNN reported earlier this week that Tom Cruise recently signed a non-exclusive deal with Warner Bros. Discovery to develop and produce theatrical films. Warner Bros. Discovery is CNN 's parent company.
