General Secretary To Lam meets with Speaker of the British House of Commons

On October 29 (local time), within the framework of his official visit to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam To Lam had a meeting with Speaker of the British House of Commons Lindsay Hoyle at Westminster Palace in London.

Speaker of the House of Commons Lindsay Hoyle welcomed and highly appreciated the official visit of General Secretary To Lam, his wife Ngo Phuong Ly and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, emphasizing that this visit opens a new phase of cooperation of historic significance in bilateral relations in all fields, especially in the parliamentary cooperation channel.

Mr. Lindsay Hoyle expressed his admiration for the heroic tradition of the Vietnamese people's struggle for national independence and unification and was impressed by the achievements that Vietnam has made after 80 years of independence, especially in maintaining political stability, socio-economic development and international integration, considering Vietnam an "Asian tiger."

Pleased with the increasingly good and substantive development of cooperation between the two countries' parliaments, Speaker of the House of Commons Hoyle emphasized that these are good foundations that contribute significantly to deepening the traditional friendship between Vietnam and the UK.

Expressing his sincere gratitude for the warm welcome and solemn reception that Speaker of the House of Commons Hoyle and the British Parliament had given to him and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, General Secretary To Lam affirmed that the Party, State and National Assembly of Vietnam always attach importance to developing the traditional friendship with the UK, in which the parliamentary channel plays a practical role in promoting and supervising the implementation of intergovernmental agreements, while deepening understanding and trust between the two countries.

The General Secretary believes that Vietnam-UK cooperation in all fields, especially parliamentary cooperation, will be further promoted and elevated, commensurate with the level of the relationship, the potential of both sides as well as the expectations of the two peoples.

Appreciating the role of the British House of Commons in the British political system, especially in legislation and foreign policy planning, as well as the positive contributions of Mr. Hoyle and leaders of the British Parliament to parliamentary cooperation and bilateral relations in recent times, the General Secretary asked the British House of Commons to continue to pay attention to, support and urge the effective implementation of cooperation agreements between the two governments, including the Vietnam-UK Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA), the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), cooperation programs in education and training, scientific research, innovation and human resource development; and continue to allocate resources for development cooperation with Vietnam, especially in the fields of clean energy, climate change response and public health.

The General Secretary thanked the British Parliament for always supporting the Vietnamese community to successfully integrate into the host society. The General Secretary also asked the British House of Commons to support the negotiation and signing of a labor cooperation agreement between the two countries, creating a legal corridor for Vietnamese citizens with legitimate aspirations to come to the UK to work legally.

Speaker of the House of Commons Lindsay Hoyle emphasized the desire for the two countries to join hands to build the future and the House of Commons supports the British Government in strengthening cooperation with Vietnam, especially in the UK's strong fields such as education and training, healthcare, climate change response and the desire to increase people-to-people exchanges.

The two leaders agreed to continue strengthening cooperation between the two National Assemblies through maintaining regular exchanges of delegations at all levels, especially high-level ones; establishing friendship parliamentary groups and promoting exchanges between specialized committees; promoting the exchange of legislative experiences, perfecting the legal framework, and creating favorable conditions for expanding bilateral cooperation.

The two sides also discussed enhancing coordination at multilateral parliamentary forums such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), as well as regional parliamentary cooperation mechanisms.

Regarding the East Sea issue, General Secretary To Lam asked the British Parliament to continue to maintain an objective and balanced stance, supporting the viewpoint of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in resolving disputes by peaceful means, on the basis of international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

On this occasion, General Secretary To Lam conveyed the regards and invitation to visit Vietnam from National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man to Mr. Lindsay Hoyle. Speaker of the House of Commons Lindsay Hoyle happily accepted the invitation and looked forward to visiting Vietnam soon.
