"Strategy" to get high score in 10th grade English exam
Below are instructions from Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai Huong (teacher at Nguyen Tri Phuong Secondary School, Hanoi) on some things to keep in mind when doing English tests to have a chance to get high scores in the 10th grade entrance exam.
Allocate time wisely
Immediately after receiving the test, you should skim the entire test in the first 1-2 minutes, estimating the type of questions and their difficulty. Then, determine the order of doing the test: you should start with the "easy" questions (pronunciation, stress, some simple vocabulary and grammar) to get the spirit and score quickly. Pay attention to timing appropriately for the more time-consuming parts such as reading comprehension, sentence arrangement and rewriting common sentences.
You should spend the last 5 minutes to check the highlighted sentences, avoid highlighting the wrong box or wrong sentence order.
“Swipe - select - return” strategy
Skim: During the test, when you encounter a difficult question, mark it and move on to another question if you haven't found the solution yet to avoid wasting time.
Choose: Quickly identify “sure” or “relatively easy” questions to score early points.
Go back: After finishing the easy questions, go back to the difficult questions to review them more carefully and deduce the solution.
Review before submission
Students should check their work to see if there are any blank answers before submitting it to the exam proctor.
Make sure to mark the correct number - answer column.
For questions that have had their answers corrected many times, erase the old answers to avoid being marked incorrectly.
Keep your mind relaxed and focused
Students need to practice solid test-taking skills and always be careful during the exam to achieve optimal scores. Self-confidence and mental stability will help them achieve good results.
Note some types of exercises and mistakes that can easily cause you to lose points in English
Even though they have studied and taken notes, many students are easily subjective and make mistakes when encountering phonetics exercises. The rules for pronouncing the suffix "-ed" and "-s" often appear in the exercise of finding words with underlined parts that are pronounced differently from the rest.
Sentence finding exercises: The answers in the sentences are mixed up, making it easy for students to get confused if they assume the first underlined part in the sentence is answer A, the second underlined part is answer B...
When encountering a synonyms exercise (Writing skill), many students do not read the question, hastily read the answers and immediately choose an answer that is correct in both grammar and semantics. The correct answer must be a sentence that has a similar meaning to the sentence given in the question.
