On the morning of July 11, the National Wage Council held its second meeting to discuss the regional minimum wage plan for 2026.
Speaking to the press before the meeting, Vice President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor Ngo Duy Hieu said that the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor still maintains its stance on the proposed increase in regional minimum wages in both proposed options of 8.3% and 9.2%.
Mr. Ngo Duy Hieu analyzed that in the current context, many positive signals have been announced by the Government, the General Statistics Office and relevant agencies, such as: Economic growth, export, and investment are all improving. The number of businesses withdrawing from the market tends to decrease...
"We also pay special attention to the context of price storms that are clearly affecting workers' lives. Right before the meeting, gasoline prices continued to increase, which is a clear sign that workers' purchasing power and spending are affected, further highlighting the need for an appropriate salary adjustment, enough to partially offset the impact of inflation, " said Mr. Ngo Duy Hieu.
The leader of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor said that adjusting the regional minimum wage is not simply to meet living needs, but also to create an important motivation for workers to improve productivity, sense of responsibility and sense of innovation and creativity.
This is very necessary in the context that the entire Party and people are making efforts to implement the call of General Secretary To Lam and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on applying science and technology to improve labor productivity.
" Increasing wages is not a burden, but a way to create development motivation for both workers and businesses. When workers have better income, they will feel secure in contributing, accompanying businesses to overcome difficulties, thereby creating added value, offsetting costs and contributing positively to the overall development of the economy ," Mr. Ngo Duy Hieu added.
Previously, at the first session of the National Wage Council (June 26), the relevant parties still could not find a common voice on the proposed regional minimum wage.
Workers' representatives proposed two minimum wage increases of 8.3% and 9.2%. Meanwhile, employers' representatives only wanted a 3-5% adjustment. Both sides agreed that this wage adjustment would start from January 1, 2026.
In addition, the council's Technical Department also proposed a regional minimum wage increase of 6.5-7%.
