The new president of Romania - Mr. Nicușor Dan (55 years old) - is not only known as a politician , but also a math prodigy of this country when he was in school.
Before pursuing a political career, Nicușor Dan was well known in academic circles for his impressive mathematical achievements. He won a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad two years in a row.

According to the official website of the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), Mr. Nicușor Dan won gold medals when participating in the competition in 1987 and 1988.
In both of his participations, he achieved a perfect score of 42/42, at that time, Mr. Dan was a high school student. At this stage, Romania was one of the countries that often achieved the highest results in the International Mathematical Olympiad.
Later, Mr. Dan majored in mathematics at the University of Bucharest (Romania), then continued his studies at the French National Pedagogical School (ENS) - one of the most prestigious schools in France.
He graduated with a master's degree here, then continued his doctoral studies at Sorbonne University North of Paris (France).
After returning to Romania, Mr. Dan became active in the social sector, then entered politics and became mayor of Bucharest in 2020.
Mr. Dan is the founder and first executive director of the Bucharest Higher Pedagogical School, affiliated with the Mathematics Institute of the Romanian Academy.
Here, Mr. Dan once worked as a math lecturer.
When Nicușor Dan won the Romanian presidency, the international press was interested in mentioning his impressive academic background.
