On April 7, US President Donald Trump said his administration would impose an additional 50% tariff on goods from China if the country did not withdraw its 34% retaliatory tariff on the US.
President Trump tweeted that the deadline to roll back the tariffs was April 8, and if China did not do so, his administration's additional tariffs — which would push the total tariff rate above 100% — would go into effect the following day.
On Truth Social, Mr. Trump stated: "Yesterday, China enacted a retaliatory tariff of 34%, on top of their already record high tariffs, non-tariff barriers, illegal corporate subsidies, and longstanding, massive currency manipulation - despite my warning that any country that retaliates against the United States with additional tariffs, beyond the longstanding tariff abuses they have already imposed on our Country, will immediately face new and substantially higher tariffs, well above and beyond what was originally imposed.
Therefore, if China does not withdraw the 34% increase in addition to their longstanding trade abuses by tomorrow, April 8, 2025, the United States will impose an ADDITIONAL 50% tariff on China, effective April 9.
Additionally, all negotiations with China regarding meetings they have requested with us will be terminated! Negotiations with other countries, who have also requested meetings, will begin immediately."
On imports from China, Mr. Trump said in an announcement last week that the United States would begin imposing a 34% tariff, which would be in addition to the 20% tariff he has imposed on China since taking office for his second term on January 20.
Also on April 7, Mr. Trump ruled out the possibility of suspending the recently announced tariffs, even though they have shaken the global economy .
Speaking to reporters at the White House, the US President affirmed: "We are not considering that. We have many, many countries that are coming to negotiate agreements with us," while emphasizing that any such agreement would have to be "fair"./.
