UN Secretary General: Vietnam is a model of peace and sustainable development

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the occasion of attending the 3rd United Nations Summit on Oceans in Nice (France).

On June 9 (local time), on the occasion of attending the 3rd United Nations Summit on Oceans in Nice (France), Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and the UN Secretary-General expressed their joy at meeting each other again at this important event.

The UN Secretary-General affirmed that meetings and contacts with Vietnamese leaders, including Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, at international conferences have become a tradition of the United Nations and Vietnam.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh congratulated the success of the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference; highly appreciated the role of the Secretary-General and UN agencies in promoting sustainable development and maritime cooperation; and expressed deep gratitude to the United Nations for supporting Vietnam's renovation and development over the past nearly 40 years.

The Prime Minister affirmed that Vietnam values and supports the central role of the United Nations in global governance, and stressed that Vietnam will continue to support multilateralism and international law, contributing to global efforts to promote dialogue and cooperation, and reform the United Nations in an effective manner.

The Prime Minister proposed that the United Nations continue to support Vietnam in strengthening the development of the marine economy, improving resilience, responding to natural disasters, adapting to climate change and energy transition.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres congratulated Vietnam on its socio-economic development achievements; assessed Vietnam as a model of peace and sustainable development; and contributed to enhancing the voice and role of developing countries.

The UN Secretary-General hopes to closely coordinate with Vietnam to implement the important results achieved at this Conference, contributing to peace, stability, inclusive and sustainable development globally.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highly agrees with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's vision and "whole-people, comprehensive" approach in addressing emerging global issues today.

The two leaders agreed to further strengthen ASEAN-United Nations relations; promote ASEAN's bridging role in promoting dialogue and cooperation in the context of complicated developments in the world and the region with many emerging contradictions and conflicts.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh respectfully thanked the United Nations Secretary-General for accepting the invitation to visit Vietnam and co-chair the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention on Cybercrime in Hanoi (October 2025)./.
