United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on April 17 expressed concern about North Korea's latest missile test launch, which the country confirmed was a new type of solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
Speaking at the UN Security Council (UNSC) session, UN Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiari said Mr. Guterres called on North Korea to "fully comply with its international obligations under all relevant UNSC resolutions, as well as resume dialogue towards lasting peace and complete and verifiable denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula."
Also at the meeting, South Korean Ambassador to the UN Hwang Joon-kook called on the permanent members of the UN Security Council to increase efforts to find solutions to the North Korean nuclear issue.
In a joint statement on the same day, nine members of the UN Security Council along with South Korea also expressed concern about North Korea's test launch of a new type of ICBM on April 13.
Meanwhile, Yonhap news agency quoted a statement from the South Korean Foreign Ministry saying that the country's chief nuclear negotiator Kim Gunn met with Swedish Foreign Minister Jan Knutsson on April 17 to discuss ways to cooperate with Sweden, as well as the European Union (EU) on the North Korean nuclear issue. Sweden currently holds the presidency of the European Council.
Since the beginning of 2023, North Korea has conducted many missile launches into the East Sea of the country, including the test of a new type of ICBM on April 13. At the same time, South Korea and the United States also conducted many joint military exercises, making the situation on the Korean Peninsula even more tense.
