On July 3, Mr. Tang Chi Thuong - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health - said that he had organized a discussion on capacity building for the Con Dao Special Zone Medical Center with the participation of leading experts in the city's health sector.

The meeting demonstrated the clear determination of the city's post-merger health sector to serve the people, leaving no one behind - even in the farthest places.

The Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health said that the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center not only serves the people living on the island, but also receives tens of thousands of tourists and officials every year. Recently, this place has officially belonged to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health.

In recent years, the center has been newly built and invested in quite modern equipment, however the biggest difficulty is still the lack of qualified medical human resources.

Emergency care, childbirth, dialysis, and sea accidents - which are very specific to the island - are a long-standing concern for residents here, not only the locals but also tourists and investors.

The meeting agreed on many important contents to proactively improve the medical capacity of Con Dao special zone. The city's health sector has determined to implement the improvement of Con Dao's medical capacity in two phases:

Phase 1, which the city will soon deploy in the third quarter of 2025, will rotate skilled doctors to the island according to each specialty, including obstetrics, surgery, internal medicine, and pediatrics; organize remote consultations and online continuous education (CME) for medical staff of the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center.

During this phase, priority will be given to developing safe and on-site obstetrics with full obstetric, anesthesiology and neonatal resuscitation teams - reducing dependence on costly and risky transfers by ship and helicopter.

At the same time, strengthen the capacity of emergency trauma, internal medicine and pediatrics, meeting common medical care needs in Con Dao such as: sea accidents, tourist accidents, emergency needs for children and the elderly.

In addition, building an on-site blood bank to ensure safe emergency care in obstetrics, surgery and critical situations is also a priority.

In phase 2, the city will develop a project with specific policies for Con Dao health care: with the goal of forming a general hospital with an appropriate scale right in Con Dao; strengthening links and professional support with major hospitals such as Hung Vuong Hospital, Nhi Dong 1, Binh Dan, Nhan Dan Gia Dinh...

In particular, the Department of Health coordinates with medical universities in the city to develop a training program for resident doctors with rotational practice at the Con Dao Medical Center/Hospital. This is an opportunity to provide training and experience in a special environment for resident doctors and propose policies to retain and attract medical personnel to work in Con Dao.

It is expected that the Department of Health will organize a field survey in Con Dao with the participation of leading experts to assess the reality and develop a suitable, feasible and sustainable implementation plan.

Mr. Thuong added that on the upcoming September 2nd, there will be the first rotation of specialized doctors from the city to work at the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center.

This is not only a professional action, but also a strong message: "The city's healthcare system after the merger will not only expand geographically, but also in service spirit, bringing quality treatment to even the most remote islands."
