Round 32 and round 16 of the 2024 Molinari Open 3-cushion carom billiards tournament took place on December 16, in Ho Chi Minh City. In round 32, players competed in a best-of-two format to select 16 players to continue. This round featured all the prominent faces of the Vietnamese 3-cushion carom billiards community such as Tran Quyet Chien, Tran Thanh Luc, Bao Phuong Vinh, Nguyen Tran Thanh Tu, Tran Duc Minh... and especially the "legend" Torbjorn Blomdahl.
Tran Quyet Chien has a big series
In particular, Tran Quyet Chien continued to show stable performance and had a winning record. Vietnam's No. 1 player defeated Truong Be Nam (with a score of 40-38) and Vuong Minh Thien (with a score of 40-21). Notably, in the match against Minh Thien, Tran Quyet Chien impressed by scoring 40 points in just 12 turns, achieving a high efficiency of 3.333 points/turn.
Tran Quyet Chien had a spectacular sprint with a series of 13 points to create a big turning point in the match, thereby winning the overall victory to enter the quarterfinals.
With a perfect record of 2 wins, Tran Quyet Chien quickly secured a ticket to the round of 16, meeting Tran Quoc Vinh. The player born in 1984 won with a score of 40-17, after 19 turns. Notably, in this match, when leading 25-17, Quyet Chien made a spectacular sprint with a series of 13 points in the 18th turn, increasing the gap to 38-17.

Blomdahl "gives up" before Vietnamese players
Torbjorn Blomdahl lost 2 matches against Vietnamese players so he could not enter the round of 16, including 1 loss against Bao Phuong Vinh.
The surprise happened in the round of 32, when veteran player Torbjorn Blomdahl had to stop. In the opening match of the round of 32, the Swedish "legend" won 40-30 against Ngo Van Duc. But in the decisive match for a ticket to the round of 16, the player born in 1962 lost 35-40 to Bao Phuong Binh. The loss to Phuong Vinh forced Blomdahl to play a play-off match to have a chance to enter the round of 16. But in the play-off match, the player who won the World Cup 46 times continued to lose with a score of 37-40 to Vy Ngoc Chau.

The 2024 Molinari Open 3-Cushion Carom Billiards Tournament has a large prize money. Accordingly, the champion will receive 146 million VND in cash. The runner-up will receive 51 million VND. The two players tied for third place will receive 16.5 million VND each.
Along with players like world number 1 Dick Jaspers (Netherlands), Frederic Caudron (Belgium), Eddy Merckx (Belgium), Marco Zanetti (Italy), Torbjorn Blomdahl is considered a veteran of 3-cushion carom billiards in the world.
