Due to the circulation of storm No. 3, the entire 0.5 hectare mulberry area along the Red River of Mrs. Do Thi Thoa's family, village 1, Thanh Thinh commune was flooded and died. Immediately after the natural disaster, Mrs. Thoa's family proceeded to clean up the fields, prepare the land, and take advantage of favorable weather to replant mulberry according to the seasonal schedule instructed by the district's agricultural sector. For the mulberry area in the less affected areas, Mrs. Thoa focused on taking care of it, after a while the mulberry trees gave leaves so she could continue to raise the last batch of silkworms.
Ms. Thoa said: "For the area of dead mulberry trees, the family hired an excavator to replant the fields, make beds to replant with new mulberry varieties transferred from Lam Dong . My family is determined to restore 100% of the area to quickly raise silkworms again. For many years, growing mulberry trees to raise silkworms has brought a stable source of income for the family. Up to now, the entire area of newly planted mulberry trees of the family has grown well, by next March we can harvest leaves to raise silkworms for the new crop."
Thanh Thinh commune is the locality with the largest mulberry growing area in Tran Yen district. Due to the impact of storm No. 3, 100% of the commune's mulberry area was flooded, with nearly 50% of the area severely affected. Immediately after the storm, Thanh Thinh commune authorities coordinated with the district's functional agencies to inspect and assess the extent of damage, and propose appropriate solutions. By the end of 2024, the commune had completed replanting the dead mulberry trees, and in 2025, Thanh Thinh commune strives to plant 10 hectares of new mulberry trees, aiming to increase sustainable income for the people.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Thanh - Secretary of Thanh Thinh Commune Party Committee shared: "After storm No. 3, the commune focused on restoring agricultural production, focusing on restoring the entire damaged mulberry area. The people in the commune have also received support from the provincial, district and sector leaders with fertilizers and new mulberry varieties to replant the dead mulberry area. We are very excited and quickly went to the fields to rebuild the mulberry area to ensure productivity as well as mulberry leaf output for silkworm farming in the next crop."
Tran Yen is the locality with the largest mulberry area in Yen Bai province with nearly 1,000 hectares, 1,500 silkworm raising households, the average product value reaches 300 million VND/ha. According to district statistics, the total mulberry area affected and damaged after storm No. 3 is 700 hectares, concentrated in communes with large areas along the Red River such as: Thanh Thinh, Y Can, Bao Dap, Minh Quan... Immediately after the storm, Tran Yen district coordinated with the Central Sericulture Research Center to conduct field training for district agricultural officials and people to promptly recover mulberry areas, reduce new planting costs and stabilize leaf productivity for spring silkworm farming.
During the training session, the staff of the Central Sericulture Research Center guided people to divide into different levels of impact, quickly implement the digging of drainage ditches, stripping leaves and pruning branches, adding fertilizer to stimulate new shoots. After 1 month, 600 hectares of mulberry trees were revived and green, people returned to raising silkworms. With the mulberry area that could not be restored due to being buried about 100 hectares, the agricultural sector deployed registration to households, prepared fertilizers, seedlings, with seedling sources from the Central Sericulture Center, Yen Bai Sericulture Joint Stock Company, mulberry tree cuttings in communes that were not flooded such as: Hong Ca, Tan Dong and neighboring areas.
By the end of December 2024, the entire mulberry area in the district had been completely restored. Mr. Tran Anh Tuan - Secretary of Tran Yen District Party Committee informed: With the attention of the province, especially the personal attention of the Provincial Party Secretary Tran Huy Tuan who came to plant mulberry and encouraged people in "Saturday with the people", it created a great motivation for Tran Yen to overcome the consequences of storm No. 3, especially restoring the entire damaged mulberry area. In 2024, the whole district will have more than 1,000 hectares of mulberry; silkworm cocoon output will reach 1,500 tons/year, with income value reaching nearly 300 billion VND.
The district currently has 25 concentrated silkworm breeding facilities and 1,600 large silkworm breeding households; 15 cooperatives and over 100 cooperative groups with over 1,100 members have been established. In addition, 12 chains have been built between cooperatives and Yen Bai Silk Joint Stock Company to produce and purchase silkworm cocoons and silk reeling products. In 2025, Tran Yen district strives to plant and replant 150 hectares of mulberry, with silkworm cocoon output reaching 1,800 tons.
Mulberry cultivation and silkworm raising have been contributing to improving the living standards and income of the people. Mulberry trees and silkworms are the main plants and animals that help increase the value in agricultural economic development. Tran Yen, rejuvenating the mulberry fields, will be an important driving force for Tran Yen to soon complete the goal of building an advanced new rural district, aiming to build a model new rural district.
