Awakening the "green gold mine" of Thac Lake.

With a surface area of nearly 20,000 hectares, Thac Ba Lake is not only an important hydroelectric project but also a "green gold mine" for the sustainable development of commercial aquaculture.

Yen Binh district deploys patrol and control forces to protect aquatic resources in Thac Ba Lake.
Yen Bai strengthens protection of aquatic resources.

Leveraging the advantages of the water surface.

Yen Binh district currently has approximately 800 hectares of aquaculture with over 2,000 fish cages belonging to more than 300 households, 13 cooperative groups, and many cooperatives and businesses. In 2024, the district's aquaculture production reached 8,500 tons. The main models are cage fish farming and net-enclosed fish farming. Due to the large size of Thac Ba Lake, its clear water, and numerous inlets, cage fish farming has developed strongly in the communes of Vinh Kien, Thinh Hung, Han Da, Phuc An, etc. Many households and cooperatives have invested in hundreds of fish cages, harvesting tens of tons each year. A prime example is Hoang Kim Aquaculture Cooperative (Thinh Hung commune) with 300 fish cages, achieving a production of over 700 tons per year.

Notably, several aquaculture units in Yen Binh district have adopted VietGAP standards and traceability, with products achieving OCOP 3-star certification and being distributed in Hanoi and major supermarket chains. Along with cage farming, the model of net-enclosed fish farming in lakes and straits has also proven highly effective due to its utilization of natural food sources, cost savings, and low mortality rates. The range of farmed species is increasingly diverse, including many specialty species such as snakehead fish, catfish, black carp, and pangasius, contributing to increased product value and expanded markets.

Overcoming obstacles to achieve development.

Despite its abundant potential, fish farming on Thac Ba Lake in Yen Binh district still faces many difficulties. During the dry season, low water levels cause many fish cages to lack oxygen, forcing people to move the cages further from the shore, incurring additional transportation and electricity costs. Overfishing using light nets and electric shock devices still occurs, seriously impacting aquatic resources and the environment.

In response to this situation, the district has planned concentrated aquaculture areas, provided support for electricity supply, built temporary roads, and created favorable conditions for people to move cages to deeper water areas. Every year, the district organizes the release of fish fry to replenish resources, while also promoting awareness, strengthening inspections, and handling illegal fishing activities.

Along with that are fundamental policies and solutions to help people feel secure in investing and developing sustainably, such as: supporting technology transfer, providing preferential loans, building model projects, and linking consumption along the value chain.

Mr. Le Van Thu from Ma village, Vinh Kien commune, shared: "My family currently has nearly 100 fish cages. Besides raising fish for consumption such as grass carp and tilapia, I also invest in raising snakehead fish and catfish fingerlings, which are specialty fish species favored by the market. Thanks to capital and technical support, I supply about 50,000 fingerlings each year, earning hundreds of millions of dong. The mature fish are also sold steadily through the cooperative and restaurants."

Exploiting the "green gold mine" efficiently and sustainably.

Beyond focusing on increasing production, Yen Binh district is aiming to develop aquaculture into a key economic sector while protecting the ecological environment. The district aims to expand the scale to 3,000 fish cages, achieving a production of over 9,000 tons per year. Simultaneously, the district is promoting close linkages between farmers, cooperatives, and businesses to enhance the efficiency of the value chain. Aquatic products will be developed according to VietGAP standards and the OCOP program, targeting markets outside the province and for export.

Simultaneously, environmental protection of Thac Ba Lake continues to be emphasized through measures such as controlling fishing activities, regularly releasing fish to replenish stocks, and conserving rare native fish species. A potential development direction being implemented by the district is ecotourism linked to fish farming. Tourists can experience the life of fishermen, enjoy local fish specialties at homestays along the lake, contributing to promoting the image of Thac Ba Lake and enhancing its overall economic value.

Developing the fish farming industry on Thac Ba Lake is not only about rationally utilizing the water surface area but also a crucial strategy for creating sustainable livelihoods, promoting rural development, and fostering local socio-economic development. Typical examples, such as the case of Mr. Le Van Thu's household, demonstrate that with proper investment and appropriate support mechanisms, fish farming on Thac Ba Lake can become a sustainable source of wealth for people in the lake region, contributing positively to the overall development of the province.
