The Vietnam Fine Arts Museum recently held a ceremony to receive the painting "The Hills of Deli Ibrahim (Algiers)" by King Hàm Nghi and launched the book "Hàm Nghi: The Exiled Emperor - An Artist in Algiers" by Dr. Amandine Dabat.
According to Nguyen Anh Minh, Director of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, the artwork "The Hills of Deli Ibrahim (Algiers)," donated to the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum by Dr. Amandine Dabat, a fifth-generation descendant of King Ham Nghi, on behalf of the Ham Nghi family, is a priceless gift and a noble gesture for the Museum.
Dr. Amandine Dabat presents the certificate to the Director of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, Nguyen Anh Minh.
Dr. Amandine Dabat shared that King Hàm Nghi became a painter and sculptor during his exile in Algiers (the capital of Algeria). His early works, from 1889, established him as the first modern painter of Vietnam.
Her doctoral dissertation on the life and career of King Hàm Nghi has now been translated and published in Vietnamese, officially inscribing his name in the history of Vietnamese art.
“Immediately after I defended my doctoral thesis, the Cernuschi Museum in Paris contacted me to include works by King Hàm Nghi in their collection. Ms. Anne Fort, the curator of the Vietnamese art collection at the museum, informed me that five works by King Hàm Nghi, including two oil paintings on canvas, two pastel paintings, and a sculpture, were added to the Cernuschi Museum's collection in 2020,” Dr. Amandine informed.
A fifth-generation descendant of King Hàm Nghi shared that she wanted to donate this painting along with the release of her book, compiled from her doctoral dissertation and translated into Vietnamese. This book explains and clarifies the artistic life of King Hàm Nghi, his influences, the development of his style, and his connections with great artists of the era.
