Pilot implementation of the model of classification and collection of domestic solid waste in Ward 2, Ca Mau City

To implement the Plan for classifying domestic solid waste at source in order to comply with the provisions of the Law on Environmental Protection 2020, and at the same time to continue to strengthen the management of domestic solid waste according to Decision No. 2047/QD-UBND dated October 1, 2021 of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province on approving the Project on collection and transportation of solid waste in Ca Mau province, period from 2011 - 2030, on April 20, 2023, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment held a meeting with participants including representatives of the People's Committee of Ward 2, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Ca Mau City, the Department of Urban Management of Ca Mau City and Ca Mau Urban Environment Joint Stock Company.

The meeting was chaired by Mr. Do Quang Hung - Deputy Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, who spoke about the implementation of the Coordination Plan between the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the People's Committee of Ca Mau City on the pilot implementation of the model of classifying domestic solid waste at source in Ward 2, Ca Mau City. Accordingly, domestic solid waste at source is classified into the following 5 groups: Food waste; waste that can be reused and recycled; hazardous waste; bulky solid waste and other domestic solid waste.

Discuss and exchange on the plan for classification, collection and transportation of solid waste in Ward 2, Ca Mau City

At the meeting, the Chairman of Ward 2 People's Committee gave a preliminary report on the socio -economic situation in the Ward; population distribution (organizations, enterprises, households, etc.); routes (neighborhoods, alleys, etc.); the current status of collection, transportation and treatment of solid waste arising in the area; difficulties, obstacles and proposals and recommendations in the collection, transportation and treatment work, etc. In particular, the biggest difficulty of the locality at present is finding a place to gather solid waste while waiting for the collection unit to come to transport and treat it because there is no more land in the area; the current status of collection on the roads, sidewalks and some alleys of the Ward is difficult due to the small area, so it is impossible to place public solid waste classification containers for households and individuals to put in, and the collection unit cannot go to households and individuals to collect food waste after classification from people, etc.

Through discussions at the meeting, in order to better understand the current status of collection and transportation of domestic solid waste in the Ward, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment will coordinate with relevant agencies and units and the People's Committee of Ward 2 to conduct surveys and determine collection locations for groups of solid waste (recycled, food, other solid waste and hazardous waste); at the same time, request the People's Committee of Ward 2 to compile a list of households eligible for support to be provided with packaging/bags and bins for classifying domestic solid waste to encourage people to participate in classifying waste according to regulations. In addition, Ca Mau Urban Environment Joint Stock Company also proposed that the People's Committee of Ward 2 coordinate with the Company when implementing the pilot model to guide people to classify and transfer domestic solid waste according to the prescribed method and time.

Concluding the meeting, Mr. Do Quang Hung - Deputy Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment emphasized that the work of propaganda, dissemination and guidance for people to classify domestic solid waste at source is a decisive factor and an important role in creating a change in awareness and change in behavior and habits in classifying and treating domestic waste at home, contributing to raising awareness and responsibility of each person in joining hands to protect the environment. Thereby, it is necessary to clearly show people how to identify the waste groups that must be classified and how to use bins, bags, and label them according to regulations: Food waste group and other domestic solid waste group; at the same time, deploy the collection time frame and collection day of domestic solid waste after classification to each household in the area; Information on organizations and individuals collecting domestic solid waste in the locality, etc. to gradually expand and build a synchronous system of management, collection and treatment of domestic solid waste in the province to control pollution, protect the environment, ecological landscape, people's health, contributing to the implementation of sustainable socio-economic development goals./.
