Currently, the demand for water in the world is increasing. According to the United Nations World Water Development Report 2024, agriculture accounts for about 70%, industry accounts for about 20% and domestic (or urban) accounts for about 12% of freshwater withdrawals. Groundwater provides about 25% of total water used for irrigation and half of freshwater withdrawals for domestic purposes. Water demand from urban areas has experienced a significant increase compared to other sectors and is likely to continue to increase as populations urbanize and water supply and sanitation systems serving cities expand.
Not outside the current world trend, in Vietnam, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment also has updated forecasts that by 2030, the water demand for industries will account for about 122.47 billion m3/year. However, along with the potential, the industry also has certain challenges. Vietnam is a country with abundant water but is facing many challenges due to climate change leading to saltwater intrusion, floods, and droughts. Currently, Vietnam has about 80 wastewater treatment projects, with a capacity of more than 2 million m3 per day, being implemented. However, there are currently about 750 water treatment plants in Vietnam, with a total capacity of more than 1 million m3 per day. The rate of urban population with access to clean water is over 92%, while the national average is only 17.5%. Therefore, to provide 100% of the population with access to clean water, the government needs a large investment in drainage infrastructure. By 2030, water demand in Vietnam will increase by 32% compared to present, so nearly 9 billion USD will be needed to invest in infrastructure for clean water collection, treatment and drainage. And it is essential for the government to attract investment from the private sector to replace old infrastructure with new infrastructure.
Along with the impacts of climate change and lack of investment, urban development that is too fast and too "hot" is also one of the challenges that puts great pressure on the environment. According to statistics in the first 6 months of 2024, the construction industry had a growth rate of 7.34%, which is the highest increase compared to the same period in the period 2020 - 2024. The development of the construction industry as well as urban areas leads to inadequate wastewater treatment, lack of appropriate equipment and technology. Therefore, providing solutions including the application of advanced technologies and research on industry development trends is an important task for the development of Vietnam's water industry.
