According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), North Korea recently held an inauguration ceremony for 10,000 new modern houses built in Hwasong District (capital Pyongyang). Leader Kim Jong Un himself attended this ceremony.
The 10,000 new apartments include modern blocks, located on an area of over 150 hectares in Hwasong District and construction began in February last year. This is part of an ambitious construction project announced by North Korea in 2021. Accordingly, by 2025, there will be an additional 50,000 modern apartments in the capital Pyongyang.
As described by KCNA, this is North Korea's most important new housing project and one of the country's top priorities. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un affirmed that the project to build tens of thousands of modern apartments in Pyongyang has been long-cherished and promoted by the Workers' Party of Korea to bring more stable and civilized living conditions to the people. Mr. Kim Jong Un even declared that this project will help realize the idea of turning the capital Pyongyang into a world- famous city.
In the past decade or so, especially since the 50,000-apartment project in Pyongyang was announced, North Korea has built many outstanding projects, including the city of Samjiyon, which is called by the country's media as a model of modern civilization with an infrastructure system including: apartments, hotels, medical facilities, commercial areas, ski resorts...
The North Korean government has stressed that Samjiyon will be a model for future development projects across the country. In the capital Pyongyang alone, 10,000 new apartments and an 80-story skyscraper have been completed.
In late February, Kim Jong Un also attended the groundbreaking ceremony for another project of about 4,100 houses in the Sopo district of Pyongyang, with the aim of turning this project into a luxury neighborhood, demonstrating the status and rapid development of North Korea. Previously, in 2017, the Ryomyong neighborhood in Pyongyang, considered the most modern and beautiful in North Korea, was also formed.
NK News once quoted Leader Kim Jong Un as revealing that, along with promoting comprehensive rural construction across the country, in the coming years, North Korea will continue to announce new street construction projects in the capital Pyongyang.
However, international media have pointed out the difficulties that North Korea has encountered in completing major construction projects, including the country facing international sanctions and reduced trade due to the shutdown to prevent and control the Covid-19 pandemic.
Even leader Kim Jong Un admitted that housing construction projects in the country are facing unprecedented challenges. Therefore, to complete the plan to build 50,000 new, modern houses in the capital, North Korea had to mobilize the participation of about 100,000 young volunteers. The requirements that leader Kim Jong Un made during the project implementation were to closely monitor the construction, save materials and prevent accidents...
What North Korea has announced recently shows that there is a construction boom stemming from the urgent need for housing taking place in the country, especially in the capital Pyongyang, and that has somewhat surprised the world.
