The city’s agricultural sector has implemented many demonstration models of new rice varieties suitable to the soil and local characteristics; initially, they have stable yields, high quality and good resistance. This is the basis for supplementing and diversifying rice varieties, improving production efficiency for farmers, contributing to the goal of restructuring the agricultural sector.

Outstanding productivity, high economic efficiency
At the field of Duong Lam 2 village (Hoa Phong commune), Mr. Nguyen Dao said that with the technical support of the Agricultural and Forestry Extension Center (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development), his family has tested planting 3 rice varieties including: DB18, Thom Huong 31, HG12. The final harvest results show that Thom Huong 31 has large, high-quality rice grains; DB18 has a very high yield, over 75 quintals/ha. Mr. Dao said that the limited rate of pests and diseases, good weather resistance, reduced fertilizer costs, and less strenuous cultivation are the advantages of actual planting. Mr. Dao said that the agricultural sector needs to soon put these varieties into mass production to help local farmers increase their income and improve their lives.
It is known that in the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop, the Agricultural and Forestry Extension Center has deployed a trial planting of 6 new rice varieties in Duong Lam 2 village with a scale of 6.5 hectares, including: ST25, DB18, Thom Huong 31, Thien Huong 6, VNR10 and HG12. According to many farmers participating in the model, the rice varieties all have different outstanding advantages. For example, the VNR10 variety produces larger panicles and grains than local mass rice varieties, and has a shorter growth period than other mass varieties; the ST25 variety has a very strong tillering ability, creating high-quality rice with high economic value; the DB18 variety has good resistance...
As a result, the actual harvest yield of the above rice varieties was higher than expected, specifically: Thom Huong 31 variety reached 75-80 quintals/ha, 10-15 quintals/ha higher than expected; ST 25 variety reached 62-64 quintals/ha (expected 60.5 quintals/ha); HG12 variety reached 68-70 quintals/ha (expected 65 quintals/ha), VNR10 from 75-80 quintals/ha (expected 68 quintals/ha), Thien Huong 6 reached 64 quintals/ha and DB 18 yielded from 75-80 quintals/ha (expected 72 quintals/ha).
In Cam Toai Dong village (Hoa Phong commune), the high-quality rice variety ST25 is a variety that has been tested through 4 production seasons. Mr. Nguyen Nho, Head of Cam Toai Dong village, said that in the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop, farmers in the village have participated in planting about 6 hectares of ST25 variety in an organic direction. Through monitoring, this rice variety has the ability to grow and develop well; strong plants, good resistance to weather and pests, good disease resistance... Although the yield is not as outstanding as some other rice varieties, ST25 has a very high economic value. At the beginning of the season, the fresh rice price of ST25 variety is about 12,000 VND/kg, while normal varieties are only about 8,000 VND/kg.
Through the pilot model, the profit after deducting costs of the ST25 variety is up to 785,000 VND/sao. “ST25 and DT100 are two rice varieties mainly grown in the village with a total area of 42 hectares. These are all varieties with high economic efficiency, introduced into the variety structure after testing over many crops. We plan to plant more DB18 variety to more comprehensively evaluate the suitability of the rice fields and yield,” Mr. Nho shared.

Continue to demonstrate and introduce new rice varieties
Ms. Ngo Thi Thu Van, Deputy Director of the Agricultural and Forestry Extension Center, said that the center regularly introduces and demonstrates new rice varieties and high-quality varieties to evaluate their adaptability, growth, resistance to pests and diseases and productivity; from there, select varieties suitable for local conditions to supplement and diversify the production variety structure. Along with that, the center also builds a number of organic rice production models to improve the quality of Da Nang 's rice products.
Preliminary assessments show that when implementing the above models, productivity, quality and profit are all improved compared to traditional production. This is also one of the development goals that the agricultural sector is aiming for. Some localities that have produced rice in an organic direction need to continue production, thereby aiming to produce completely organic rice. In the summer-autumn crop of 2024, the center will continue to import new promising rice varieties, suitable for the soil and climate of the locality to serve as a basis for evaluation and inclusion in the variety structure in the coming time.
According to Mr. Doan Van Bao, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture, during the production process, some rice varieties show signs of degeneration, are susceptible to pests and diseases, and have reduced resistance, affecting productivity and quality. Therefore, the introduction and demonstration to find new rice varieties with outstanding advantages and suitability is necessary to include in the variety structure in the city. On the other hand, during the trial planting process, the department always coordinates with units and localities to monitor and evaluate the demonstration results, especially the situation of pests and diseases on new rice varieties.
Based on the proposal of the Agricultural and Forestry Extension Center on introducing new varieties into the variety structure, the department will preside and coordinate with units and localities to make specific assessments; advise the department to add to the variety structure to carry out mass production in the following crops. "Currently, the city's variety structure is medium and short-term varieties with many outstanding advantages, high yield potential, and good resistance. For example, the main variety set: HT1, Ha Phat 3, DT100, VNR10... are medium and short-term varieties, suitable for production in both winter-spring and summer-autumn crops", Mr. Bao added.
