"A powerful assistant" of farmers

Within the framework of the Project on building a model of agriculture, forestry and community tourism in Dak Phoi commune (Project), the Dak Lak Provincial Forestry Science and Technology Association presented 5 local households with Enfarm soil nutrient measuring equipment.

The support of Enfarm soil nutrient measuring equipment has helped farmers significantly reduce input costs, increase crop yields and improve sustainable livelihoods.

In Cao Bang village, the compact Enfarm soil nutrient meter has become a "close friend" and a powerful assistant, accompanying the production activities of Mr. Trieu Duc Duy's family for nearly three months.

Mr. Duy shared that his family has 1.5 hectares of land for production and has a lot of experience in agriculture , but up to now, taking care of crops has mainly relied on experience and intuition. This not only costs a lot of investment but also has the potential to cause soil degradation and environmental pollution due to excess chemicals. Everything has changed since his family received support from the Enfarm device. With this compact handheld device, directly connected to a smartphone, Mr. Duy can easily measure important and complex indicators in the soil such as NPK nutrition, moisture, and pH in just a few minutes.

Officers of Lak Forest Protection Management Board check nutrients in the soil at Mr. Y Krang Tor's garden.

Because he was not proficient with smartphones, when he was supported with the Enfarm machine, Mr. Y Krang Tor's family (T'Long hamlet) was enthusiastically guided by the officers of the Lak Forest Protection Management Board. Mr. Y Krang's family has nearly 9 sao of land growing coffee, pepper and some fruit trees. Previously, based on experience, for each fertilization period, his family usually applied 2 bags/sao; since having the Enfarm meter and being guided by officers of the Lak Forest Protection Management Board, each fertilization period the family has reduced to 1.5 bags/sao. Initially, seeing the amount of fertilizer reduced but the plants still grow and develop well, he was very happy.

Mr. Hoang Ngoc Diep, an officer of the Lak Forest Protection Management Board, was assigned to instruct 3 households in Dak Phoi commune on how to use the Enfarm device. He said that every month he will directly bring the device to the households' gardens to measure soil parameters. This process helps to accurately grasp the soil condition in real time. From the measured results of NPK content, pH, humidity and specific recommendations analyzed by the Enfarm device and sent via the phone application, he will directly instruct people on how to use the most appropriate amount of fertilizer and pesticides, thereby avoiding waste and preventing nutritional imbalance.

An outstanding and extremely useful feature of the Enfarm device is the ability to detect diseases through images. According to this mechanism, users can easily take pictures of diseased plants with their smartphones through the Enfarm app. This image data will be processed and analyzed by the AI system. Immediately after that, the results will be sent back with specific recommendations on what disease the plants are suffering from (pests or fungi), helping farmers have timely and accurate treatment plans, no longer having to guess like before.

Dr. Tran Ngoc Thanh, Director of the Central Highlands Institute of Agriculture and Rural Development (Dong A University), Chairman of the Provincial Forestry Science and Technology Association, Head of the Project Steering Committee, said that developing the livelihoods of ethnic minority households in Dak Phoi commune faces many difficulties. In particular, most households lack knowledge of applying science and technology in crop production, so they use fertilizers and pesticides improperly, leading to ineffective cultivation. Applying scientific and technical advances and new crop varieties with high productivity and suitable for climate change into agricultural production is one of the long-term goals that the Project wants to aim for.

Therefore, the Project has supported Enfarm equipment for ethnic minority households to create a change in production habits from traditional methods to smart agriculture, applying digital technology. Applying Enfarm equipment will help people optimize the process of taking care of crops, especially strictly controlling the dosage and timing of using input materials, thereby contributing to reducing production costs, improving product quality and productivity, and increasing income on the same area.
