(HG) - Farmers with low-lying land do not grow Autumn-Winter rice but have switched to growing water mimosa, which is now ready for harvest, providing an attractive source of income.
According to many farmers who grow water caltrops, if taken care of properly, a water caltrop field can yield a profit of about 10 million VND/acre/crop during the flood season.
Currently, traders go directly to the fields to buy fresh larva at a price of 10,000-12,000 VND/kg, an increase of about 2,000-3,000 VND/kg compared to the same period last year; while people harvest and sell retail at a price of 15,000 VND/kg.
The larva is an easy-to-grow plant with low investment costs, mainly to prevent golden apple snails from eating the seedlings when they are still small. When the plants are large, just fertilize them properly so that they grow well and produce tubers for harvest. On average, it takes about 3 months from planting to having tubers for harvest. The harvest time usually lasts 2-3 months, depending on the care. If cared for carefully, the larva grows well, the yield can reach 1 ton/acre. With the current selling price, farmers have profits many times higher than those from autumn-winter rice production.
