Growing green-skinned grapefruit produces delicious fruit, the garden is as beautiful as in the movies, a farmer in Da Nang sells out as soon as he picks it.

Dare to think, dare to do, Mr. Phan Van Huu (61 years old, residing in Trung Nghia village, Hoa Ninh commune, Hoa Vang district, Da Nang city) boldly invested in growing green-skinned grapefruit gardens according to VietGAP standards, bringing in hundreds of millions of dong in income each year.

Convert to new crops

We visited Mr. Huu's family's orchard when hundreds of green-skinned grapefruit trees were all luxuriant and full of fruit. Mr. Huu shared: "I invested in growing pepper on this farm since 2008. After a while, I realized that the soil here was not suitable, the cultivation was unprofitable, and the output was unstable, so the area of crops was lost one year, and the entire crop had to be cut down, causing great damage to the family's economy .

Through the process of researching and learning new models, I realized that green-skinned grapefruit trees are very suitable for Hoa Ninh land, so I decided to renovate the garden to convert to grapefruit monoculture from 2018."

Because he did not have much capital, he initially only bought a few seedlings to care for and graft to expand. Determined to stick with fruit trees for a long time, he chose to develop the garden in the direction of clean agriculture . All processes from planting, caring to harvesting, he followed VietGAP standards; limited the use of fertilizers and chemicals and prioritized the use of biological products and decomposed manure.

With the nature of a hard-working and diligent farmer, Mr. Huu diligently takes care of the lush grapefruit garden. Along with that, he researches, actively learns, accumulates more knowledge and practical experience to make the green-skin grapefruit garden more economically efficient.

Mr. Huu said that in order for grapefruit gardens to always achieve high productivity and quality, growers must master the growth characteristics of the trees and have appropriate impacts using scientific farming methods. At the same time, they must know how to apply scientific and technical advances suitable to the farming conditions and soil conditions of the garden to overcome disadvantages.

Green-skinned grapefruit is a shade-loving plant and cannot withstand direct sunlight. It is often affected by yellow leaves, root rot, and other diseases such as leaf and fruit scabs, root mealybugs, fruit borers, etc. To overcome this, he arranged the planting density appropriately, fertilized in a balanced manner, and used non-woven fabric bags to wrap each grapefruit from a young age.

To proactively prevent pests and ensure the quality of commercial grapefruit, Mr. Huu uses lamps at night to repel butterflies and uses a water nozzle to spray directly onto the branches and trunk of the tree to help clean away harmful fungi and pests.

In addition, he regularly weeds around the base and trims the branches, removing small fruits to help the tree grow stronger and produce larger, tastier fruits. Thanks to that, Mr. Huu's clean grapefruits are very popular with customers, and traders come to the garden to order.

Profit over 200 million VND/year

The product "Hoa Ninh Green-Skin Grapefruit" is certified to meet VietGAP standards and recognized by the People's Committee of Da Nang City to meet 4-star OCOP standards in 2021. To avoid the refrain of "good harvest, low price, good price, bad harvest", Mr. Huu does not grow grapefruit in the traditional way but learns the technique of growing grapefruit to harvest fruit all year round, or to watch for major holidays so that the tree bears fruit, meeting the needs of consumers.

Green-skinned grapefruit has an average weight of 1.2-2.5kg/fruit; thin green skin, turns light yellow when ripe, has a light aroma; the grapefruit segments are beautiful pink-red and are very crunchy, sweet, and juicy.

Mr. Huu said that he is currently growing more than 250 green-skinned grapefruit trees, and every 3-4 months he will sell a batch of grapefruit at 50,000 VND/kg. Especially on full moon, holidays, and Tet, the market demand increases, the price of green-skinned grapefruit also increases to 70,000-100,000 VND/kg and sells very well, even not enough to supply the market.

On average, each grapefruit tree brings in an income of 6 million VND per year. Currently, on an area of over 1 hectare, he mainly grows green-skin grapefruit and earns a profit of over 200 million VND per year. In addition, he also grows jackfruit, bananas, oranges, papaya, guava, and raises chickens, bringing in an additional income of about 50 million VND per year. During peak seasons, Mr. Huu hires 2-3 local workers to prune branches, bag fruit, fertilize... with a salary of 300,000 VND per person per day.

With initial success from his grapefruit garden, Mr. Huu enthusiastically shared his experiences in gardening and raising livestock with farmers in the area to develop the economy.

Mr. Huu confided: "With the help and guidance of the local government in encouraging and supporting the renovation of mixed gardens and converting to high-quality crop varieties, I have achieved the results I have today. Along with that, thanks to the Social Policy Bank creating conditions for a loan of 100 million VND, I have more resources to invest in developing a fruit tree farm combined with livestock farming. In the near future, I will expand the scale of the garden by another 2 hectares to increase revenue, aiming at developing a sustainable agricultural economy."
