Identity of Vietnamese referees at AFF Cup group stage

There are 6 Vietnamese referees and assistant referees on duty at the AFF Cup 2024, namely Ngo Duy Lan, Nguyen Trung Viet, Le Vu Linh, Nguyen Trung Hau, Hoang Ngoc Ha and Nguyen Manh Hai. According to the regulations of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and Southeast Asia Football Confederation (AFF), referees from countries whose national teams are competing at the AFF Cup 2024 will not be allowed to officiate. These include referees from Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore...

In the Southeast Asian region, AFF also only invites referees from countries that have been licensed by FIFA to use VAR technology (like Vietnam, VAR is used in V-League). VFF has hired referees from Saudi Arabia, Korea, Japan... to officiate matches in the AFF Cup 2024, to ensure neutrality and objectivity.

In the group stage of the AFF Cup 2024, referee Ngo Duy Lan was the fourth referee in the matches between Singapore and Cambodia and Malaysia and Singapore. Referee Le Vu Linh and assistant referee Nguyen Trung Hau were on duty at the match between Timor Leste and Singapore at Hang Day Stadium. Assistant referee Nguyen Trung Viet was also assigned to officiate 1 match in Group A. Golden whistle Hoang Ngoc Ha was the fourth referee in the match between Singapore and Thailand on December 17 in Singapore. Referee Nguyen Manh Hai was the fourth referee in the match between Thailand and Cambodia on December 20 in Thailand.

Another special feature of the AFF Cup 2024 is that there are no VAR referees at the stadiums, although VAR is being applied for the first time in this tournament. Instead, the AFC and AFF will send a permanent VAR referee team to Selangor (Malaysia) for nearly a month of the tournament. The VAR system will now be technically connected to all stadiums in countries with teams participating in the AFF Cup 2024. This VAR referee team will exchange and communicate directly with the main referee. At the stadiums, the AFF will only arrange VAR coordinators. The VAR operation of the AFF Cup 2024 is still stable so far.
