Abbot of Tu Duc Pagoda suspended for inappropriate behavior

On January 8, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha of Dong Nai province issued a decision to temporarily suspend the position of Deputy Head of the Executive Committee, Head of the Buddhist Education Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha of Vinh Cuu District (Dong Nai) for the 2021-2026 term; at the same time, temporarily suspend the position of Abbot of Tu Duc Pagoda (Thien Tan Commune, Vinh Cuu District) for monk Thich Nhuan Nghi.

The suspension period is from January 8 until the official conclusion of the Standing Committee of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha of Dong Nai province.

According to the decision, the reason for the temporary suspension is that monk Thich Nhuan Nghi has had substandard behavior in his daily life and studies; in addition, he has caused internal disunity that has affected the church at all levels and monasteries.

The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha of Dong Nai province assigned the Sangha Board, the Control Board and the Legal Board to coordinate with the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha of Vinh Cuu district to verify and clarify issues related to Tu Duc pagoda, and report before January 22.
