Specifically, a team of experts working in the Egyptian port city of Alexandria has recovered 22 giant stone blocks that were used to build the Alexandria Lighthouse. These blocks were salvaged from the bottom of the sea. After being brought to shore, the team of experts will study and digitally scan them. Photo: Public domain.

The research results will be added to the digital records of more than 100 underwater rock formations discovered over the past decade, according to a statement from Dassault Systems Foundation, one of the project's sponsors. Photo: GEDEON Programmes/CEAlex.

The research was led by French archaeologist and architect Isabelle Hairy, who, along with a team of historians, archaeologists, architects and engineers, created a virtual 3D model of the ancient Alexandria lighthouse – which was heavily damaged by an earthquake when it collapsed in the 14th century. The newly recovered blocks include parts of a large door weighing "70-80 tons," according to the statement. Experts also found parts of a large Egyptian-style "obelisk," or ceremonial gate, which may have been a monument. Photo: thearchaeologist.

The ruins of the Alexandria Lighthouse were discovered underwater by French archaeologist Jean-Yves Empereur in 1994. Since then, experts have been working to salvage the stones and collect data to create a digital replica of the structure. Photo: Wikimedia Commons.
