Born in the most difficult days of the Southern revolution, the Gia Dinh Regiment (Ho Chi Minh City Command) was initially called the Y4 Security Squad - Saigon - Gia Dinh Party Committee, then transferred to C13. In order to meet the mission requirements, Zone 7 and Saigon - Gia Dinh Party Committee decided to develop C13 into K17 (1962), Doan Quyet Thang (1963), Quyet Thang Battalion (1965), Quyet Thang Regiment (1968). On April 1, 1975, the unit was officially named Gia Dinh Regiment. According to Lieutenant Colonel Bui Van Hung, Political Commissar of the Regiment, during the resistance war against the US to save the country, the Regiment achieved brilliant feats associated with the place names of Saigon - Gia Dinh city such as Bau Lach, An Nhon, Ba Song, Phu Hoa Dong, Suoi Cut, Dan Han, Go Noi. After participating in the Liberation of Saigon in 1975, the Gia Dinh Regiment swept away the remnants of the enemy, protected and built the city; fought to protect the southwestern border and fulfilled its international duty to help the Cambodian people escape the Khmer Rouge genocide with the code name Regiment 742, Front 779. In October 1989, the regiment returned to the country, carrying out training and combat readiness tasks at two levels for Military Region 7 and Ho Chi Minh City. According to Lieutenant Colonel Bui Van Hung, with the attention, leadership and direction of the Party Committee - City Command, the effective coordination and support of agencies, units, Party committees, authorities and local people, the cadres and soldiers of the Gia Dinh Regiment are always united, proactive, creative, self-reliant, self-reliant to overcome difficulties, strive to excel in completing political tasks. For many consecutive years, the Regiment has led the emulation movement of Emulation Group 2, City Command and won many high prizes at sports and competitions at the City, Military Region and Army levels.
