On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) (September 15, 1945 - September 15, 2025), Dr. Nguyen Hong Son, Chairman of the Union of Vietnamese Associations in Japan, shared with VNA reporters in Tokyo his profound assessments of the role of VNA in journalistic life, in connecting overseas Vietnamese with their homeland, as well as the transformation of VNA in the digital age.
According to Mr. Nguyen Hong Son, from the first days after the successful August Revolution, when the country had just gained independence, from Bach Mai Broadcasting Station, Vietnam News Agency (VNTTX) - the predecessor of VNA - broadcast the full text of the Declaration of Independence and the list of the Provisional Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in three languages: Vietnamese, English, and French.
That event officially marked the birth of the national news agency, opening the journey of 80 years accompanying the country. Since then, VNA has become the main source of news, providing official information for the entire domestic press system, and at the same time an important foreign channel for international friends to better understand Vietnam.
During the two resistance wars against French colonialism and American imperialism, generations of VNA reporters went to the battlefield, reporting and accompanying the people and soldiers, bringing each line of news and each photo that truly breathed the war. Some did not return, some were disabled for life, but all left behind a precious legacy: honesty, bravery and patriotism.

After the country's reunification, VNA embarked on a new journey - a journey of innovation and integration. From typewritten news bulletins, VNA has transformed into a multimedia electronic media system, providing news in many forms: text, images, videos , graphics, audio, serving the domestic and international public.
Mr. Nguyen Hong Son highly appreciated VNA's steadfastness in providing authentic, objective and honest information, not following sensational trends, but always putting national interests first.
Regarding the role of VNA as the official information agency of the State, Mr. Nguyen Hong Son emphasized that from the first news bulletin to today's diverse media products, VNA has always promptly reflected the country's major policies and guidelines, while maintaining the function of social criticism, fighting against false information, protecting the truth and national solidarity.
With more than 60 types of information products, from written news, photos, television, graphics to audio, VNA provides original data for the entire domestic press system. Thanks to that, information reaching the public is always guaranteed to be accurate and objective.

The President of the Union of Vietnamese Associations in Japan also highly appreciated the role of VNA in the Vietnamese community abroad.
VNA’s media publications help overseas Vietnamese grasp accurate and timely information about the domestic situation and policies towards overseas Vietnamese, while also recognizing the contributions and success stories of overseas Vietnamese. This not only creates cohesion but also arouses national pride among Vietnamese people living far from the Fatherland.
VNA also promotes exchange, cooperation and community solidarity by regularly reporting on cultural events, seminars and community activities of overseas Vietnamese, thereby contributing to connecting overseas Vietnamese organizations and individuals with each other and with domestic agencies.
He affirmed that VNA has become an important information bridge, contributing to maintaining the connection between overseas Vietnamese and their homeland as well as promoting community solidarity and promoting the country's image to the world .
Looking back at the transformation of VNA during special periods of the country, Mr. Nguyen Hong Son said that VNA has flexibly adapted to the digital age, innovating content in an intuitive and accessible direction.
He said that although artificial intelligence (AI) is developing strongly today, leading to some opinions that AI will narrow the role of journalists, news reporters have still been gaining trust from readers, especially the young generation and overseas Vietnamese through creative media products.
According to the President of the Union of Vietnamese Associations in Japan, there are many opportunities in the coming time for press and media agencies, including the need to expand the scope of influence of official information in a multi-dimensional media environment.
To strengthen international cooperation and enhance the position of VNA as a prestigious news agency in the region and the world, Mr. Nguyen Hong Son believes that VNA's leadership can exploit AI technology, big data and user behavior analysis to personalize propaganda content.
Besides, journalists need to continue to maintain political courage and professional ethics in today's complex information environment.
He emphasized that training and maintaining a team of human resources who are both professionally skilled and knowledgeable about technology will be the foundation for VNA to continue to play a pioneering role in the digital journalism era./.
