- Vy Thi Huyen Trang, a 23-year-old girl from Khoi Na Tha, Dong Kinh ward, Lang Son province (Yen Trach commune, former Cao Loc district) has just won a master's scholarship at Tsinghua University (China) - a prestigious school ranked 17th in the world according to the rankings. QS World University Rankings 2026. Trang's persistent pursuit of knowledge is an inspiring story of perseverance and aspiration to reach far.
Tsinghua University, founded in 1911, is one of the most prestigiouseducational institutions in China, which has trained many talented people. As the leading center for training high-quality human resources in Asia, Tsinghua University is the dream of millions of students around the world. Winning a master's scholarship at this school is a testament to Vy Thi Huyen Trang's talent and tireless efforts.
Born into a farming family in Lang Son , Trang is the eldest child, and from a young age has been accustomed to following her parents to the fields to harvest corn. The image of her parents’ tanned skin and the drops of sweat rolling down their faces has deeply engraved in her the dream of studying hard to change her future. “You just have to study well, our family has nothing more precious than education” – her father’s advice has become a guiding principle, helping Trang persevere in school and class even when many of her peers chose to drop out of school to make a living.
In 8th grade at Yen Trach Secondary School, Trang started learning Chinese because she loved Chinese culture. Although the class initially had only 5 students, she gradually became the only one to study with the teacher. On rainy days, her parents still took Trang to school more than 10 km on an old tricycle, using clothes as a cushion. It was her family's silent sacrifice that gave her the motivation to study hard.
That effort paid off when Trang passed the Chinese major exam as second place at Chu Van An High School for the Gifted (Lang Son). During her three years of study, she maintained excellent results and actively participated in extracurricular activities at the school. She won a Bronze Medal at Hung Vuong Summer Camp and was a member of the national Chinese language team.
In 2019, Trang won a full scholarship from the Chinese government to study at Jinan University (in Guangdong province). The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted her study abroad plans, but she was not discouraged. During her online studies, Trang worked as a teaching assistant at a Chinese language center to hone her skills and earn extra income. “Every time I see my friends discouraged because they cannot go to China, I often encourage them to try harder, because getting the opportunity to study is not easy,” Trang shared.
In 2022, Trang officially went to China to study at Chi Nam University. She emotionally recounted: “That was the first time my parents came to the airport. When they saw foreigners, they asked to take pictures because they had only seen them on TV before.” Those simple memories became the motivation for her to confidently step into a foreign land.
Living up to her family’s expectations, Trang graduated with an average score of 4.32/5.00 – equivalent to excellent – and was recognized as “Excellent Class Monitor” for two consecutive years. Teacher Wang Yu, the head teacher, commented: “Vy Thi Huyen Trang is a person with strong ideals and ability to carry out. When teaching the third-year student class, I used her as an example to praise, hoping that everyone can strive like Huyen Trang.”
Conquer the academic peak
From practical experiences at domestic and foreign logistics companies, Trang continued to challenge herself in a higher academic environment. Within 5 months, she self-studied all the basic knowledge, built a research outline on the smart logistics model and entered the interview round in English at Tsinghua University - one of the pioneering "cradles" in research and application of technology in logistics in China.
On June 18, Trang and her family were overwhelmed with happiness when they received the notice of admission to the master's program at Tsinghua University. In addition, she also received master's acceptance letters from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, but Trang still chose to study at Tsinghua University - the school she had always dreamed of.
Currently, Trang is focusing on studying for the SCMP (Supply Chain Management Professional) certification exam before starting her master's program on August 28.
Regarding her future plans, young Vy Thi Huyen Trang shared: “I want to become a smart logistics expert to improve the efficiency of the supply chain in Vietnam in general and in Lang Son – a border area with favorable trade – in particular. I also hope to be able to teach knowledge to the young generation in my hometown in the future.”
With the training motto of Tsinghua University: “Tu cuong bat tuc, hau duc tai vat” – meaning to strive constantly but not forget to preserve humane qualities – Vy Thi Huyen Trang promises to continue to develop comprehensively in knowledge and personality, contributing to spreading the spirit of studiousness to the young generation of Lang Son and the whole country.
