From the story of the Bronze Drum...

Approximately one month after two renowned theaters in Ho Chi Minh City, the Trong Dong and Lan Anh theaters, ceased operations, the local cultural authorities officially commented on the matter this past week.

This demonstrates the importance of performance venues like Lan Anh and Trong Dong in the cultural and artistic life of Ho Chi Minh City.

The Trong Dong and Lan Anh stages, nearly three decades old and located in prime locations, are medium-sized venues with a capacity of thousands of spectators, leaving a deep impression on both the general public and many renowned artists. Regarding this "incident," a representative from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports stated that Lan Anh and Trong Dong have played a significant role in building a diverse and rich performing arts environment in the locality.

The severe impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the rapid explosion of technology, along with new trends in art appreciation, are among the important reasons leading to the regrettable closure of Lan Anh and Trong Dong. From the sad story of Trong Dong and Lan Anh, and its impact on the cultural and entertainment life of the people, a more thorough analysis is needed regarding the existence of the public-private partnership model in modern life, especially in traditional performing arts, in the context of rapidly shifting trends in art and entertainment appreciation.

With a broader perspective based on the "phenomenon" of Trong Dong and Lan Anh, one can envision the future existence of both private and public performing arts models. The numerous challenges will determine the future of traditional performing arts such as Cheo, Tuong, Cai Luong, and Quan Ho theaters. How should public-private partnerships and the role of state management in culture be promoted to prevent future performances like LucTeam and Dao Thuc water puppetry from failing, following the same path as Trong Dong, 126, Lan Anh, or once-famous theaters and cinemas in Hanoi such as Dan Chu, Long Bien, Me Linh, and Bac Do?

The challenge of sustaining the existence of various performing arts venues, cinemas, and theaters needs to be addressed thoroughly. The issue is not just about innovation in repertoire, performance programs, audience engagement, and attracting talented artists, but also about investing in infrastructure, technological innovation, and performance equipment. These are things that private entities alone cannot effectively achieve in the long term.
