How strong is the German women's volleyball team, the opponent of the Vietnamese team?

The Vietnamese women's volleyball team will meet the German women's team (ranked 11th in the world) at 5:00 p.m. this afternoon, August 25, at the 2025 World Volleyball Championship. This is considered a very difficult opponent for the Vietnamese girls.

Over the past three years, German volleyball's reputation has been boosted significantly, with Die Schmetterlinge (The Butterflies - the nickname of the German women's volleyball team) entering the top 10 of the world rankings.

Now, although they have dropped one place, they are still ranked quite high at 11th in the latest rankings of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). The ranking of the Vietnamese women's team is 22nd.

The German women's team is currently led by Italian coach Giulio Cesare Bregoli, the 50-year-old who replaced Alexander Waibl at the end of last year. He had a dream start to his tenure, taking the German women's team to the quarterfinals of the 2025 Volleyball Nations League (VNL), where they lost to world number two Brazil in five sets.

Coming to the 2025 Volleyball World Championship in Thailand, the German women's team is predicted to be one of the "dark horses" of the tournament.

In the opening match, they also had a 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-8, 25-20) against their opponent Kenya, and Germany's goal is to defeat the Vietnamese women's team to have a place in the knockout round.

The standout performer for the German women’s team is spiker Lina Alsmeier, who averaged at least 15 points per game in this year’s VNL. Coach Bregoli hopes she can continue that form in Thailand. She will share the attacking duties with Lena Kindermann and Emilia Weske, who both had impressive performances in the 2025 VNL.

Experienced libero Anna Pogany and winger Lena Stigrot will lead the line, while central midfielder Camilla Weitzel will anchor the defence alongside Anastasia Cekulaev.

In addition, Sarah Straube has matured and become a confident passer, and will be a key factor in maintaining the German team's steady tempo and pace.

The match against Germany is a big challenge for coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and his team.
