This year’s tournament features nine teams, divided into three groups. Group A includes hosts Indonesia, Malaysia and Timor Leste; Group C is considered “death” with Thailand, Singapore and Australia.
Compared to previous seasons, the competition format has been adjusted when teams compete in a round robin to calculate rankings; the three group winners and the second-place team with the best results will qualify for the semi-finals.
Based on the performance in the most recent season (2019), the Vietnam U16 women's team is ranked in the number 1 seed group with host Indonesia and Thailand.
The next seed groups include: Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore (group 2) and Cambodia, Timor Leste, Australia (group 3). Notably, Australia and Timor Leste are the two representatives participating in this playground for the first time, replacing the absence of Laos and the Philippines.
The AFF U16 Women’s Championship was held for three consecutive seasons from 2017 to 2019 and returned after a five-year hiatus with the hope of continuing to be a rich playground for the development of young women’s football in the region. This year’s tournament will take place from August 18 to 30 in Indonesia.
To prepare for the tournament, the Vietnam U16 women's team will officially gather from July 23 at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center. Under the guidance of Japanese head coach Okiyama Masahiko, the squad consists of 30 players summoned from localities with strong youth women's training movements such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Ha Nam , Thai Nguyen, along with 2 faces from the national youth women's team.
The return of the Southeast Asian U16 Women's Championship not only opens up valuable opportunities for young talents to compete, but is also an important stepping stone in the development of Vietnamese women's football at the youth level. As a seeded team, the Vietnam U16 Women's Championship aims to go far, while also accumulating experience for the next generation of national women's football.
