Shortly after the final whistle blew at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on July 29, Jakarta security forces had to intervene when a group of Indonesian fans went on a rampage over their team's defeat.

According to a statement from the Jakarta Pusat police, 22 fans were arrested, two of whom were injured, one of whom was hospitalized with serious injuries. Police chief Susatyo Purnomo Condro said the authorities intervened promptly to prevent further riots. He also called on fans to remain calm and show sportsmanship , instead of letting their emotions overwhelm them and disrupt public order.

The match started with the enthusiasm of tens of thousands of Indonesian fans, but ended in disappointment. The only goal of the match was scored by Nguyen Cong Phuong, a 19-year-old midfielder of Vietnam, after a brave finish in the 37th minute. That goal not only brought U23 Vietnam to the championship for the third consecutive time, but also shattered Indonesia's dream of winning the championship on home ground.

On forums and social networks, Indonesian fans expressed their dissatisfaction not only because of the defeat, but also because the home team's playing style was judged to lack creativity and be too dependent on throw-ins. Domestic media also questioned coach Gerald Vanenburg's monotonous tactics, while regional football experts commented that U23 Vietnam played with courage, discipline and was completely superior for most of the match.

In contrast to the gloomy scene in Jakarta, in Hanoi and many major cities in Vietnam, thousands of fans poured into the streets to celebrate the historic championship. The sight of central streets lined with red flags with yellow stars, car horns and loud applause, once again showed the strong attraction of football to the Vietnamese people.

On the Indonesian side, the investigation into the disorder is still ongoing. Those arrested will be dealt with in accordance with the law. The authorities also affirmed that they will tighten security at major sporting events to avoid the recurrence of ugly scenes that tarnish the noble spirit that is the core value of sports.

The only goal helped U23 Vietnam win the Southeast Asian Championship. On the evening of July 29, the U23 Vietnam team defeated Indonesia 1-0 in the final of the 2025 Southeast Asian Championship held at Bung Karno Stadium.
