According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russia is preparing a new attack on Ukraine starting in late May or in the summer.
According to Mr. Zelensky, Kiev has its own clear battlefield plan. Speaking a day after the second anniversary of Russia's special military operation in Ukraine, Mr. Zelensky said it was important for Kiev and its Western allies to maintain unity, while reiterating that Ukraine's resistance depends on continued Western support.
According to Reuters, Mr. Zelensky believes that the US Congress will approve a new round of financial and military assistance, adding that the European Union has only provided 30% of the 1 million promised ammunition.
In February, Russia scored its biggest battlefield victory since May 2023 when it captured the town of Avdiivka. Following that success, President Vladimir Putin said last week that Russian troops would push deeper into Ukraine. The Ukrainian president also announced for the first time that 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed since the conflict began.
In August 2023, the New York Times published a report citing US officials that put the number of Ukrainian soldiers killed at nearly 70,000. The same report said that up to 120,000 Russian soldiers had died in the war. The Russian Foreign Ministry dismissed these figures as false and the figures could not be independently verified.
