British military expert Alexander Mercouris said that the US Patriot missile defense system cannot protect the Ukrainian army from Russia's Iskander-M and Zircon missiles.

Mr. Mercouris assessed: "It is clear that the Patriot air defense system cannot withstand the Iskander-M ballistic missile and Zircon hypersonic missile that the Russian army has used in real combat."
This expert also believes that the fact that Western allies provide Kiev with other air defense systems cannot change the situation of the Ukrainian army and will not be able to protect them from massive airstrikes by the Russian army.
Previously, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that within the past 24 hours, the country's military had destroyed a Ukrainian unit equipped with a US-made Patriot air defense missile system at an enemy firing base.
Meanwhile, on the same day, Ukrainian military commander Oleksandr Syrskyi also expressed concern that his country's forces were facing a difficult situation in combat operations in the Kharkov region, but affirmed that Kiev was doing everything possible to hold the defense line.
Moscow launched a new offensive from Russian territory into Ukraine’s northern Kharkiv region on May 10, threatening to open a new front in the 27-month conflict. A day later, Russia confirmed its troops had captured five villages, while Ukraine said it was repelling the attack and fighting to regain control of residential areas.
On his Telegram page, Mr. Syrskyi said: “The units of the Defense Forces (of Ukraine) are fighting fiercely and facing difficulties, but the Defense Forces of Ukraine are doing everything to hold the defense line...”
The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed on May 12 that its troops had captured four more villages - Hatyshche, Krasne, Morokhovets, Oliinykove - in Ukraine's Kharkov region.
