"Drink to live": Students are willing to skip dinner to save money to go to coffee shops

(Dan Tri) - Instead of sitting in the library or self-study rooms, students today prefer to spend time in coffee shops. They love this so much that they are willing to "sacrifice" meals in exchange for a glass of water.

Students prefer to go to coffee shops to study.

Studying diligently with a glass of water is a familiar image of Luu Vy, a student majoring in History Education at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education. Almost every day, she “camps” at a small coffee shop on Pham Viet Chanh Street to study by herself and do group assignments.

To meet the habits and preferences of young people, coffee shops today not only have one type of drink but also become a diverse space with all kinds of drinks such as tea, juice, smoothies...

Vy believes that studying at home makes her lazy, sleepy and sometimes tempted by her phone. On the contrary, the coffee shop helps her to be more motivated to study.

“Seeing my friends around me rushing to complete their homework, I was in no mood to sit around and do nothing,” Vy said.

Not only Vy, many students nowadays also have similar habits. At coffee shops around the school area, it is not difficult to see the image of students attentively typing and taking notes.

Pham Hoai, a student at the University of Theatre and Cinema, believes that the main reason why many people invite each other to coffee shops is because when they are outside, they are exposed to open spaces, which helps them think more freely and promotes creativity.

According to the male student, study cafes often have warm, quiet, spacious spaces, making it easier to concentrate. Moreover, studying at cafes also has air conditioning, power outlets and free wifi.

“Many students choose to go to coffee shops to study not only because they want a change of scenery and to mingle with other people, but also because the shops now have many amenities that meet their study and work needs,” Hoai said.

When asked why they prefer studying at a coffee shop over at home or the library, most students said that the open space helps them concentrate and feel more motivated to study. In addition, studying at a coffee shop also makes it easier to communicate and reduces pressure.

Not only coming to finish work, young people also take the opportunity to capture beautiful moments at the shop.

“When working in groups at a coffee shop, I find people discuss more naturally. The space is not as quiet as the library, which helps me reduce stress and still feel happy while studying,” said Nhu Quynh, a student at Saigon University.

“It is better to fast than to fast from drink”

Although the price of a glass of water at a coffee shop can be several times more expensive than a normal meal, many students are willing to skip meals to spend money on drinks.

According to a survey, the price of a cup of coffee at a cafe with a study space usually ranges from 40,000 VND to 80,000 VND. Meanwhile, a full, affordable meal only costs from 30,000 VND to 50,000 VND.

Despite the large price difference, many students are still willing to pay for a seat at a coffee shop. Some even skip meals to cover the water bill.

Van Anh, a student at the University of Natural Sciences , Ho Chi Minh City National University, admitted her habit of skipping meals to sit for hours at her favorite coffee shop.

“I can sit all day working at a coffee shop. If I don’t move around, I feel something is missing,” she said.

Many young people also have similar habits, including Nhat Quang, a fourth-year student at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University.

“I might skip meals if I don’t have enough money, but I definitely can’t give up the habit of going to a coffee shop to do my homework. I think this not only helps me stay awake but is also part of my living habits, a modern lifestyle,” Quang said.

Many students think that the price for a cup of coffee is worth it because they get many benefits such as a comfortable seat, wifi, charging station and good service.

On the other hand, many students shared that going to coffee shops helps them feel like they are part of society, a trend of active and connected living.

However, this habit also has a downside when students cannot control their spending, leading to a situation where they prioritize spending money on coffee instead of other essential needs such as eating or saving for study expenses.
