The movie My father stayed behind. has aired up to episode 39, expected to end at episode 45. In the final stage, the film's main plot revolves around the love story between An (Ngoc Huyen) and Nguyen (Tran Nghia).
On some forums, viewers left negative comments about the appearance and expression of Nguyen's character. Some extremists even claimed that every time they saw Nguyen's scene, they wanted to turn off the TV because the character's voice was weak, his face was gloomy, and lacked vitality...
'I think I did well'
Share with PV , Actor Tran Nghia said he completely understood the audience's feelings and respected all opinions. However, Tran Nghia wanted to "clear Nguyen's name" because he thought the character did not deserve to receive "brickbats" or harsh comments.
According to Tran Nghia, Nguyen is a character who has experienced many incidents and suffered from psychological instability since childhood. In addition, Nguyen suffered from depression while taking care of his biological mother abroad, who was an oppressive and negative person.
“In that situation, could Nguyen be fat or always happy? I couldn’t please all the audience, but I tried my best to play my role well, as well as the requirements of the script and director,” said Tran Nghia.
The actor demonstrated that Nguyen's psychological problems were clearly shown through the scenes in which An appeared. "An was the one who brought Nguyen back. Without An, Nguyen always showed one state. That's why the audience saw Nguyen as gloomy and lifeless. It's not just negative comments, many viewers felt Nguyen's psychological instability. I think that's my small success," Tran Nghia explained.
Tran Nghia hopes that the audience will be fair and objective, evaluating the film and the character's psychological developments over time instead of a few excerpts on social networks.
“Some viewers watched the excerpt and made subjective assessments, comparing it with the original without recognizing the value that the Vietnamese version brings. Nguyen is not a character born to be a hero. He was born to question viewers about choices, about responsibility and the lingering pain of a generation. Nguyen did not choose to protest loudly. He chose to stay and in the context of the film, that is not an escape, but a painful but also very humane act. Staying to take responsibility, staying to hold on to something left of his father, of his homeland, of himself. Nguyen is also the voice of young people with ambitions, but stuck between ideals and reality. The audience will see that Nguyen is wrong or right, but he does not turn his back on the pain. Nguyen facing reality is already very courageous,” Tran Nghia shared.
'I don't make copycat films'
Regarding the audience's opposition to the love story between An and Nguyen, Tran Nghia said that those who understand the content of the story will have a different view.
“In Nguyen’s mind, love is not just an emotion, it is a kind of responsibility. A word of love in that context is not simply a confession, but a promise. Nguyen cannot open his mouth when he himself has not yet found a way out. Anyone who understands the content of the story will realize that An and Nguyen were childhood sweethearts. Therefore, their becoming a couple is something that the audience who loves the movie and the character all hope for,” the actor emphasized.
In addition, Tran Nghia said he did not watch the original before taking on the role of Nguyen. The actor believes that he acts based on his own feelings and understanding.
“Remake does not mean imitation. The character Nguyen is mine. I have my own way of conveying messages and culture. It is also a way for me to set goals and pressure myself. Just like when I was making movies. In Balanha Guesthouse , my character is also different from the original. That is my artistic perspective," the actor said.
