Tran Nghia's role is frustrating.

Many viewers were upset, even demanding to turn off their TVs every time the character Nguyen, played by Tran Nghia, appeared in the film "My Father Who Stayed Behind".

"Given that situation, could Nguyen have remained healthy and cheerful? I couldn't please all the audience, but I tried my best to perform my role well, fulfilling the requirements of the script and the director," Tran Nghia said.

The actor demonstrated that Nguyên's psychological issues were clearly shown in the scenes featuring the character An. "An is the one who brought Nguyên back. Without An, Nguyên always displayed the same state. That's why viewers see Nguyên as gloomy and lifeless. It's not just negative comments; many viewers sense Nguyên's psychological instability. I think that's a small success for me," Trần Nghĩa explained.

Tran Nghia hopes that viewers will be fair and objective, evaluating the film and the characters' psychological development based on the overall process rather than a few excerpts on social media.

“Some viewers watch the excerpt and give subjective assessments, comparing it to the original without recognizing the value that the Vietnamese version brings. Nguyen is not a character born to be a hero. He was born to question viewers about choices, responsibility, and the lingering pain of a generation. Nguyen doesn't choose noisy resistance. He chooses to stay, and within the context of the film, that's not escaping, but a painful yet humane act. He stays to take responsibility, to hold onto something that remains of his father, his homeland, and himself. Nguyen is also the voice of young people with ambitions, but trapped between ideals and reality. Viewers will see Nguyen as right or wrong, but he doesn't turn his back on the pain. Nguyen's confrontation with reality is already very courageous,” Tran Nghia shared.

'I don't make films that imitate others.'

Regarding the audience's disapproval of the romantic relationship between An and Nguyen, Tran Nghia believes that those who understand the story's content will have a different perspective.

“In Nguyen’s mind, love is not just an emotion; it’s a kind of responsibility. A declaration of love in that context isn’t simply a confession, but a promise. Nguyen can’t bring himself to speak up until he’s found his own way out. Anyone who understands the story will realize that An and Nguyen are childhood sweethearts. Therefore, their becoming a couple is something that fans of the film and the characters are eagerly anticipating,” the actor emphasized.

Tran Nghia supports the ending where An and Nguyen become a couple in "My Father, the One Who Stayed Behind."

Furthermore, Tran Nghia stated that he did not watch the original version before taking on the role of Nguyen. The actor believes in acting based on his own feelings and understanding.

“A remake doesn’t mean imitation. The character Nguyen is mine. I have my own way of conveying the message and culture. It’s also a way for me to set goals and put pressure on myself. Just like when I was making films.” " In Balanha Inn , my character is also different from the original. That's my artistic philosophy," the actor said.
