Toyoni is known as the "most romantic lake" in the land of the rising sun thanks to its beautiful heart shape and nestled amidst lush green forests.
Toyoni is a freshwater lake located in Erimo on the beautiful island of Hokkaido. Located right at the foot of Mount Kanondake, this is also the only natural lake in the Hikada range. Toyoni Lake has an area of 30 hectares, is nearly 18 meters deep and is hidden in a lush green forest. Depending on the time of year, the forest around the lake changes color, making the natural scenery here more poetic and romantic than ever.
In spring, the trees in the forest are a lush green. In summer, the surface of Japan’s heart-shaped Toyoni Lake is as flat as a mirror, reflecting the blue sky. This is the time when many tourists choose to trek to the lake because the roads are dry and easy to travel.
Many people believe that Lake Toyoni becomes the most “splendid” in autumn when the leaves change color, turning into brilliant yellow and red. The emerald green heart-shaped lake, surrounded by colorful vegetation, is truly a “human beauty” that is rarely found anywhere else.
However, the Japanese were largely unaware of the existence of Lake Toyoni until a few years ago. Overnight, thanks to a popular television commercial, the heart-shaped natural wonder was beautifully transformed from above into a popular tourist destination.
Originally, this special lake was known as Kamuito, or “The Marsh Where God Lives.” But today, most people refer to the natural wonder as “Heart Lake,” because of its unique shape.
Seeing Lake Toyoni from the air is always a breathtaking experience. That’s why helicopter tours of Lake Toyoni were born. A local travel agency offers tours to explore the lake, which are popular with tourists, especially in the fall.
The cost for each helicopter tour of this heart-shaped lake is 13,000 yen per person, equivalent to 2.8 million VND. Visitors who want to experience this should check the weather conditions in advance to book a tour to avoid cancellations due to weather effects.
If you can't experience the helicopter ride, visitors can choose to walk along an 8km trail in the forest to reach this beautiful destination in Japan.
