Why should diabetics have their feet examined regularly?

I have had diabetes for 7 years, the doctor advised me to have my feet examined regularly because complications can cause ulcers but are not painful. Is this necessary and is this complication dangerous, doctor? Why does this happen, doctor?

Doctor replied:

Hello Mrs. Kim!

Foot condition in diabetic patients is one of the common and very important chronic complications in the treatment process. Regular foot examination is absolutely necessary and extremely important for the following reasons:

- Neurological complications: Diabetes can cause nerve damage, reducing sensation in the feet. Initially, you may feel a burning, tingling, or electric shock sensation. However, over time, these sensations may lessen and you may not be able to feel small wounds, calluses, or ulcers, leading to delays in treatment. If not detected early, the wound can get worse and become infected.

- Vascular complications: Diabetes can also cause narrowing or blockage of the blood vessels that nourish the feet, leading to a lack of blood flow to the area. This can make it difficult for wounds to heal and, if the condition becomes severe, can lead to claudication or gangrene of the foot.

- Infection complications: Infection is a dangerous factor that can lead to serious problems, even amputation. Infection can start from calluses, skin cracks, blisters or from improper care (such as cutting the corners of the toenails).

For diabetic patients without complications, she can observe and care for her feet at home. However, if there are complications or reduced protective sensation, she needs to be instructed on how to properly care for her feet and have her feet examined at each regular check-up.

Therefore, regular foot examination not only helps to detect injuries or complications early, but also helps to treat them promptly and prevent the condition from becoming more serious. You should follow your doctor's advice to protect your foot health and reduce the risk of complications from diabetes.

Wishing you good health and healthy feet!
