Eight people were killed in a fire at a high-rise building in the city of Fryazino near Moscow on the afternoon of June 24 (local time), TASS news agency reported. The fire broke out in a high-rise building that housed about 30 companies. Many employees were working there at the time of the fire.
The fire broke out and quickly engulfed the fifth to seventh floors of the building, a local emergency agency spokesman said.
Two people jumped out of windows and six were trapped inside the building, the person said. According to preliminary figures, all of them were killed.
The local branch of the Russian Emergencies Ministry added that about nine people, including eight who died, were present in the area where the fire broke out and only one of them was rescued.
According to TASS, the building that caught fire is not currently part of the Platan research institute or related to the defense industry because it was privatized in the 1990s. Most of the office space in the building is rented.
The Platan Center specializes in the production of lasers and LCD screens as well as various lamps. A source told TASS that there are other facilities in the center, and the fire may have broken out in one of these areas.
The fire was classified as level 3 (high). More than 130 firefighters and 50 pieces of equipment were deployed, including a Ka-32 helicopter, to fight the fire. The fire covered an area of 5,000 square meters. Emergency services reported an explosion inside the building and said the initial cause was a gas cylinder. However, the investigation is still ongoing.
