The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly held a plenary session and adopted 17 resolutions on organizational, administrative and budgetary issues of United Nations peacekeeping missions. |
At the meeting, the General Assembly adopted by consensus a draft resolution on the budget for the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Abyei (UNISFA Mission), negotiated and coordinated by Vietnam.
This is the second Resolution that Vietnam has successfully negotiated at the 5th Committee of the 79th United Nations General Assembly.
The resolution reaffirms the basic principles of budgeting for United Nations peacekeeping operations, notes some difficulties in securing finances for peacekeeping missions in recent times, stresses the importance of allocating sufficient resources necessary for the UNISFA Mission to fulfill its assigned tasks in relevant Resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, and calls on Member States to fully contribute to the Mission's budget.
The resolution approved a budget of US$310 million to cover salaries, equipment, medical expenses and other expenses to ensure the operation of the UNISFA Mission from July 2025 to June 2026.
This is the second Resolution that Vietnam has successfully negotiated at the 5th Committee of the 79th United Nations General Assembly. |
During the negotiation process, faced with diverse viewpoints and proposals from many countries, as a coordinating country, Vietnam made efforts to find solutions to narrow differences, promote compromise and build consensus on the content of the draft Resolution, thereby helping this important Resolution receive the support of all countries in Committee 5 and at the plenary session of the General Assembly.
Along with sending nearly 200 military and police officers to work for the UNISFA Mission, our country's proactive role in coordinating and promoting the budget for this Mission is of great significance, creating necessary conditions for the implementation of peacekeeping missions in Abyei, while at the same time directly contributing to ensuring working conditions for Vietnamese "blue beret" soldiers working in this important and difficult area.
This result continues to affirm Vietnam's commitment to being an active, trustworthy, and responsible member as well as its ability to coordinate, lead, and have prestige at United Nations forums.
Located in Abyei - an area that has been at war between Sudan and South Sudan for more than 10 years and is one of Africa's hotspots, the UNISFA Mission plays an important role in maintaining peace and security in the region, with the mission of demilitarizing the Abyei area, monitoring borders, preventing conflicts, providing humanitarian assistance, protecting civilians and contributing to peacebuilding efforts. Currently, Vietnam has nearly 200 military and police officers working at the UNISFA Mission, one of the largest forces in the Mission's total personnel. |
