On October 13, Vo Thi Ngoc Ngan (aka DJ Ngan 98), the operator of ZuBu Trading and Service Company Limited and ZuBu shop business household) was temporarily detained by the Economic Police Department of Ho Chi Minh City Police to investigate the crime of Producing and trading in counterfeit food products, according to Article 193 of the Penal Code.
The appraisal results of the Institute of Criminal Science - Ministry of Public Security determined that the products produced and traded by Ngan did not meet the announced quality standards and were counterfeit. Some samples of "Collagen pills" contained the banned substances sibutramine and phenolphthalein - active ingredients that can cause cardiovascular disorders, high blood pressure, digestive disorders and potential cancer risks, seriously affecting the health of consumers.

Sibutramine was once used in weight loss drugs because of its ability to inhibit the reabsorption of serotonin and norepinephrine, making users feel full quickly and reduce appetite. However, this mechanism causes the heart to beat faster, blood pressure to increase, and blood vessels to constrict. This is the reason why drugs containing sibutramine have been banned from circulation. In Vietnam, since 2010, the Drug Administration of Vietnam, Ministry of Health , has directed to stop licensing the import of sibutramine raw materials. In April 2011, this agency suspended nationwide circulation and recalled all drugs containing the active ingredient sibutramine.
When blood vessels are narrowed, the heart has to work harder, leading to increased pressure and risk of damage in people with underlying diseases such as high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, diabetes, which can cause arrhythmia and a series of other cardiovascular diseases, even the risk of sudden death. More dangerously, users do not notice early symptoms but still think their body is healthy, losing weight or "beautiful skin", while the toxicity accumulates every day.
Even in small doses, if used for several weeks or months, the toxin can cause damage to the blood vessel walls and heart muscle. For people with cardiovascular disease, the risk of acute complications is entirely possible.
Phenolphthalein was previously used in laxatives but was banned because of its cytotoxicity and potential carcinogenicity. Phenolphthalein is not allowed in food or pharmaceuticals because many studies have shown the risk of cytotoxicity, gastrointestinal disorders and genetic mutations leading to cancer.
"This substance strongly stimulates intestinal motility, causing diarrhea, dehydration, electrolyte disturbances, especially hypokalemia. When potassium levels decrease, the heart muscle can have conduction disorders, causing arrhythmia, muscle weakness or sudden cardiac arrest," said Dr. Manh.
In addition, phenolphthalein also increases the burden on the liver and kidneys, two organs responsible for metabolizing and eliminating toxins. Long-term use can weaken liver and kidney function without the user knowing.
Dr. Manh advises users to choose products that have been declared and tested for safety by the authorities. Collagen only supports the structure of the skin, hair and joints, and cannot help lose weight or whiten the skin quickly. Products advertised as "instant effect" or "both beautify the skin and reduce fat" should be considered warning signs.
"Do not buy goods through social networks, do not use products of unknown origin. If you experience symptoms of rapid heartbeat, dizziness, or prolonged diarrhea, you should stop immediately and go to a medical facility for examination," said Mr. Manh.
