After the storm, many communes in the lower Lam River have not been able to stabilize their lives due to the large amount of waste that was swept away by floodwaters and stuck on roads, canals and residential areas. This situation not only causes environmental pollution but also poses a potential risk to traffic safety, seriously affecting people's lives.

In the days after the flood receded, along the road to Hung Nhan commune (old), now Lam Thanh commune, household waste, rotten trees, mud and animal carcasses were piled up by the flood, emitting a strong stench.
Mr. Hoa Xuan Thai, a resident of Chau Nhan 7 hamlet, Lam Thanh commune, said: “A few days ago, we discovered a large sack that smelled very bad. Later, the commune police came to check and found out that inside were the bodies of two calves that had been swept away by the river. People had to bury it to avoid pollution.”

In Chau Nhan 7 hamlet, garbage is collected right in the middle of the main road leading to the residential area, some sections are nearly 2 meters high, stretching hundreds of meters, occupying nearly half the road, making it difficult to move around. The reason is that the ditch is blocking the way, so the garbage gets stuck there.
Mr. Nguyen Duong Bao, a resident living near the area, said: “After the water receded, a lot of garbage was stuck, blocking the entire path. The commune government had to mobilize a bulldozer to clear the road, but because the amount of garbage was too large, they had to temporarily pile it on the side of the road. The pile of garbage also included pig and chicken carcasses… under the sun, the stench was strong, and flies were everywhere. People's travel was difficult, especially at school hours, when students passing through this section and encountering cars was extremely dangerous.”

Not only does it obstruct traffic, the amount of garbage left on a main road in Chau Nhan 8 hamlet greatly affects the movement of people. More worryingly, this situation poses a potential risk of disease outbreak.
Many households living near the garbage collection area have to keep their doors closed all day to avoid the stench and dust. Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai, a resident in the neighborhood, shared: “My grandchild has been coughing and has a runny nose for the past few days because of the dust and smell of the garbage. I hope the government will soon take measures to collect it, otherwise leaving it for too long will not only be unsanitary but also affect people’s health.”

Mr. Nguyen Truong Thi, Secretary of Lam Thanh Commune Party Committee, said: “Immediately after the flood receded, the commune mobilized militia, youth union and local people to clean up many roads. However, due to the large amount of garbage and the lack of specialized vehicles to collect it all, the treatment work still encountered many difficulties, especially in low-lying hamlets such as Hung Nhan Commune (old), where a lot of garbage was accumulated. Currently, the commune is deploying forces to gradually collect garbage in each area.”

The recent storm No. 10 caused prolonged heavy rain, causing many communes downstream of Lam River to be flooded from 0.5 to nearly 2 meters deep. After the water receded, in addition to damage to crops and property, the huge amount of waste left behind is becoming a major concern for the people.
Environmental experts warn that if collection is delayed, post-flood garbage can pollute water sources, creating conditions for epidemics such as dengue fever, diarrhea, and respiratory infections to arise. Therefore, there needs to be early coordination between local authorities and functional units to thoroughly handle the situation.
People hope that the government will soon support vehicles and arrange reasonable gathering points to avoid the situation of garbage being piled up in the middle of the road, causing traffic obstruction and prolonged pollution after the flood.
