At the meeting on September 22, President Luong Cuong and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres discussed many issues, including agreeing to promote ASEAN's central role in the security and development structure in the region, including resolving disputes in the East Sea by peaceful means, complying with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as well as making common contributions to global issues.
On September 23, speaking at the High-Level Debate Session of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, President Luong Cuong called on the international community to uphold multilateralism and the international system based on international law, calling on countries to comply with international law and the United Nations Charter, respect independence, sovereignty , territorial integrity, not interfere in internal affairs, not use force or threaten to use force, resolve disputes by peaceful means; maintain peace, stability, security, safety, freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea on the basis of international law, UNCLOS 1982.
At a meeting with US congressmen the same day, President Luong Cuong emphasized the importance of the US continuing to value ASEAN's central role and strengthening cooperation on global issues such as climate change, maritime security, sustainable development, etc.
The President suggested that the US continue to strengthen ties with ASEAN, promote ASEAN’s central role, and coordinate at multilateral forums to contribute to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region. US lawmakers also stressed the importance of maintaining dialogue and cooperation with ASEAN to ensure peace, stability and sustainable development in the region.
Previously, also related to cooperation in the maritime sector, during a meeting with Austrian Prime Minister Christian Stocker (September 22), President Luong Cuong proposed that the Austrian Parliament soon ratify the Vietnam-EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) as well as have a positive voice so that the European Commission can remove the "yellow card" for Vietnamese seafood.
