The fact that Vietnam was elected by the United Nations General Assembly as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HURC) for the 2026-2028 term with the highest number of votes among the Asia -Pacific countries is an important diplomatic milestone, demonstrating the international community's recognition and appreciation of our country's achievements in promoting and protecting human rights, sustainable development and deep integration.
On this occasion, Deputy Foreign Minister Dang Hoang Giang gave an interview to a reporter from Vietnam News Agency about the significance of the event to Vietnam's position in the international arena.
- Dear Deputy Minister, Vietnam has just been re-elected as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2026-2028 term with the highest number of votes in the Asia- Pacific Group. Could you please share the significance of this event for Vietnam's foreign affairs and international position?
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dang Hoang Giang: It can be said that this is an extremely joyful and proud result. This result is the highest recognition of the international community for the very correct policies and guidelines of the Party and State as well as the historical achievements of our country during the 80 years since gaining independence and 40 years of innovation to ensure human rights. Considering people as both the driving force and the goal of development.
Second is the international community's recognition of Vietnam's efforts to contribute to the common work of the United Nations, including the very important pillar of the United Nations which is ensuring human rights, providing a very consistent approach, the obligation to ensure human rights, ensuring the rights of the people of its own country, thereby promoting increased exchange and mutual understanding to enhance the sharing of common awareness.
- There are many predictions that in the coming time there will be many challenges to human rights in the world. In that context, how will Vietnam promote its role as a member of the Human Rights Council, Mr. Deputy Minister?
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dang Hoang Giang : First of all, we must ensure that the Party and State's policies serve the people, so that the people can enjoy the achievements and results of those policies.
These are policies on education, health care, digital transformation, economic achievements, health care, through which we can spread our results to our people internationally.
Second, in the context of multilateralism facing many challenges and in which the role of the United Nations, especially the role of the Human Rights Council, is also facing many challenges due to divisions and conflicts between cultures and between national values in the issue of human rights development, Vietnam's responsibility is even greater.
Therefore, Vietnam needs to have a better role at the United Nations Human Rights Council so that countries can join hands, share common values, understand and respect each other, and promote universal values of human rights.
- Thank you very much./.
