The workshop was an opportunity for delegates to share their views on green growth, opportunities and challenges in implementing the National Strategy on Green Growth for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050; the significance of Japan's support for the green development strategy in Vietnam as well as propose and recommend solutions to help implement this strategy.
Speaking at the workshop, General Director of Vietnam News Agency Vu Viet Trang said that September 21, 2023 marks an important milestone commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations. Over the past half century, the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and Japan has been continuously strengthened and developed. The two countries consider each other as important partners in implementing cooperation in foreign affairs, economy and trade...
At the recent Vietnam-Japan Economic Summit, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized the new direction in the cooperation between the two countries. That is cooperation towards sustainable development and green growth. This is also the inevitable development path not only for Vietnam but also for many countries in the world in the context of climate change which is evolving very complicatedly and becoming a common concern of the world.

"For Vietnam, implementing green growth is also to fulfill the commitment at the COP26 Conference, demonstrating Vietnam's responsibility to the international community. Vietnam and Japan have had many cooperation programs in the field of green growth. However, the two countries still have a lot of room to promote complementary cooperation," General Director Vu Viet Trang affirmed.
According to Ms. Vu Viet Trang, in contributing to spreading the implementation of commitments and action plans towards green growth, the press and media play a very important role. In carrying out that mission, VNA - a key national press agency, always upholds its role as a "bridge" in propagating and disseminating information to the public at home and abroad; actively implementing the Party and State's policies on promoting economic diplomacy to serve national development.
“Through this workshop, I believe that Japanese organizations and businesses will have more complete information about policy priorities and green growth strategies of Vietnam in general and of localities in particular, opening up new cooperation opportunities in areas where both sides have potential and strengths,” said Ms. Vu Viet Trang.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Quoc Tri said that the cooperation between Vietnam and Japan in the agricultural sector has made an important contribution to restructuring Vietnam's agriculture and rural development. In the 2020-2025 period, Japan will continue to support Vietnam in building sustainable agricultural value chains, animal and plant quarantine, natural disaster prevention and control, and irrigation development.
According to Deputy Minister Nguyen Quoc Tri, in recent years, Japan has increasingly expanded its investment in the agricultural sector, reaching nearly 240 million USD in 2020 with 42 projects, ranking 6th among agricultural investment partners in Vietnam.

Japanese investment averages about 6 million USD/project; some projects reach nearly 80 million USD. Japan has strengths such as digital transformation, green agriculture, green growth... The bilateral cooperation relationship between Vietnam and Japan will create many spaces for cooperation in areas of both sides' needs.
"Japan is a country with a lot of experience in developing safe, sustainable, and natural agricultural ecosystems. Therefore, Japan's cooperation and support are very important in implementing Vietnam's Agricultural and Rural Development Strategy," Deputy Minister Nguyen Quoc Tri assessed.
According to Mr. Nakajima Takeo, Chief Representative of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) Office in Vietnam, focusing on green development is important to address pressing issues in Vietnam, including water quality, air pollution, waste management, recycling, energy efficiency and carbon emissions. JETRO recommends that the Vietnamese Government implement stricter environmental regulations, expand environmental responsibility of manufacturers and accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) affirmed that it will closely coordinate with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to enhance Vietnam's capacity in reducing carbon emissions, focusing on water resource management; cooperate with agricultural companies in improving living conditions and deploying modern technology to minimize the impact of climate change and natural disasters.
As of August 2023, Japan is investing in 5,168 projects in Vietnam with a total registered investment capital of more than 71 billion USD. Japan currently ranks third among 143 countries and territories investing in Vietnam.
At the workshop, delegates shared their views on green growth; opportunities and challenges in implementing the National Strategy on Green Growth, period 2021-2030, vision 2050; the significance of support from Japan for the green development strategy in Vietnam; proposed and recommended solutions to help implement this strategy.
"The bilateral relationship between Vietnam and Japan is at its best in history, worthy of an extensive strategic partnership based on sincerity, trust and mutual support. In the medium and long term towards the 2030-2050 target, the two countries still have a lot of potential for further cooperation in green technology, energy conversion, and bilateral research cooperation to apply Japanese technology suitable to Vietnam's level and transformation roadmap.
