The Submission on the Limits of the Extended Continental Shelf beyond 200 nautical miles is to exercise the rights and obligations of a State Party to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), as stipulated in Article 76 of UNCLOS.

On July 17, 2024 (local time), at the United Nations headquarters in New York, USA, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, and the working delegation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs led by Ambassador Trinh Duc Hai, Deputy Chairman of the National Border Committee, officially submitted the dossier to submit the Extended Continental Shelf Limits beyond 200 nautical miles of Vietnam in the Central East Sea Area to the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS). Vietnam's submission of the Extended Continental Shelf Limits in the Central East Sea Area is an important step in affirming Vietnam's sovereignty and national interests over its continental shelf. The submission was made on the basis of the provisions of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Vietnam complies with the guidelines and procedures prescribed by UNCLOS to establish its rights to the extended continental shelf, including the provision of relevant scientific and technical evidence.
