Vietnam in top 15 countries foreigners want to live

VnExpressVnExpress27/08/2023

Vietnam ranks 15th in the list of best countries for foreigners, according to a survey by Internations.

The annual report of the world's largest expat network with more than 4 million members released the list after surveying 12,000 people from 171 countries and territories. This year, Vietnam was ranked 14th, 7 places lower than in 2022. The four countries leading the 2023 list include Mexico, Spain, Panama and Malaysia.

Internations conducted a survey based on 56 factors that affect a person's life abroad, such as living costs, housing, or the ability to use high-speed Internet.

Vietnam is among the Asian countries that foreigners rate highest in the "safety and security" index. In Asia, Vietnam ranks after Taiwan (China), UAE, Singapore, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, South Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia and ranks 35th globally in this index.

According to the ranking, Vietnam is considered by many foreigners to be "easy to settle" with positive indicators in the categories of "culture and welcome" (16); "easy to make friends" (11) and "friendliness of local people" (5).

In the "personal finance" index, Vietnam is the leading country. This index is calculated based on three factors: satisfaction with the financial situation, general living expenses, and whether the income of the survey participants is enough for a comfortable life. 77% of respondents rated the cost of living as favorable. The global average is 44%.

"One of the things I like most about Vietnam is the low cost of living," said one American survey participant. Internations experts also commented that "Vietnam cannot be beaten" in this category.

However, Vietnam, along with Indonesia, India and the Philippines, is the Asian country with the worst air quality. About 55% of foreigners living in Vietnam feel uncomfortable with air quality, three times higher than the global average.

Mexico tops the list, making it into the top five for the ninth year running. The country scores highly in the “ease of settling in” and “friendliness of locals” indices, making it easier to make friends. 75% of expats surveyed said they found it easy to make friends with locals, compared to 43% globally.

Spain ranked second in this year's rankings. Since 2014, Spain has been in the top 10 thanks to its culture, nightlife, entertainment, relaxation, and mild climate.

Panama ranked third thanks to the factors "ease of settling in", "ease of making friends" and the "culture" and "welcoming" index.

Malaysia ranked fourth in the index, thanks in part to a rise in the “quality of life” index this year. The Southeast Asian nation also scored highly for friendliness and personal finances.
