In 1953, at the age of 15, from his hometown in Ha Tinh province, he volunteered to join the army and joined the 304th Division, directly fighting on the Central Laos front. After the victory of Dien Bien Phu, he was sent to study the cello class opened by the General Department of Politics . In 1958, he returned to work at the Art Troupe of Military Region 4, then transferred to the Art Troupe of the General Department of Politics , the Art Troupe of the Southern Army, the Art Troupe of the Navy Command... During his days at the Art Troupe of the Navy Command, the troupe's leaders chose him to study music at the University of Culture. In 1981, after graduating, he was sent to work as the Cultural and Artistic Assistant of the Naval Academy. From then on, his musical career began. The first songs were composed by musician Nguyen Tien Lieu to serve the staging and performance of the Naval Academy Art Troupe. During his composing career, he wrote more than 500 songs, of which more than 100 were published in different forms.
The outstanding compositions of musician Nguyen Tien Lieu are closely related to the main themes: the Party, Uncle Ho, the soldiers of the Vietnam People's Army and were collected by him in 3 collections of songs: I have a love (2008), Tilted guitar drops (2013), Songs about the Party and Uncle Ho (2016). Although he does not consider himself a professional musician, music lovers still know about musician Nguyen Tien Lieu with 2 songs that have gone through the years, which are: When I sing about Him (composed in 1981); The song of the wind island (composed in 2003). These are the 2 songs that were considered for the State Prize for Literature and Arts. In addition, musician Nguyen Tien Lieu's musical legacy also includes 18 songs about Uncle Ho. In addition to the song " When I sing about Him ", there are also songs such as: Remembering the day Uncle visited; Areca fragrance in Uncle's hometown; Planting trees - planting people; Remembering the old teacher; Uncle Ho's Forest; The One Who Wakes Up the Morning; Memories of Him... In addition to composing music, he also composes Haiku poems and is a member of the Japan - Vietnam Haiku Poetry Club.
