On October 4, information from the Vinh Long Province Border Guard said that this unit had just discovered and temporarily detained two wooden ships carrying a large quantity of goods of unknown origin in the border waters.

Previously, at about 10:00 a.m. on October 3, the Border Guard working group discovered two wooden boats (similar to fishing boats) controlled by Pham Van Hoan (56 years old, residing in Chat Binh commune, Ninh Binh province) and Syamsadi (52 years old, Indonesian nationality) entering the Eo Loi river mouth area from the sea, in Thanh Phong commune, Vinh Long province.

Upon inspection, both were unable to present documents related to the wooden boat. On board, the border guards discovered more than 7 tons of goods including: more than 4.2 tons of animal scales suspected to be pangolin scales, 150 sets of python skin, 40 kg of animal bile, more than 1 ton of dried snail meat, nearly 1.6 tons of fish skin, 17.5 kg of snail whistles, 36 kg of animal bones, 100 kg of animal skin of unidentified species, 2.3 kg of fish gills, 39 bird beaks, 210 animal teeth and 30 bottles labeled as honey.

The people on the wooden boat could not produce any invoices or documents related to the goods. Initially, they admitted that they had purchased all the goods from Indonesia to bring back to Vietnam to sell for profit.

According to the Vinh Long Provincial Border Guard, the evidence includes scales, skins, and bones of many animal species that are strictly prohibited from hunting and trading under Vietnamese law. The case has been handed over to the Economic Police Department of Vinh Long Provincial Police and the Forest Protection Department of Region 3 to coordinate in making a record, investigating, and handling according to regulations.
