Nowadays, many young people no longer put much emphasis on university degrees, but instead choose to learn a trade, choose the job of a “freelancer” instead of being confined in a business. Is a university degree the only door to success, and do freelance jobs really bring comfort?
Recently, in the program Vitamin Happiness broadcast on THVL1 channel, the audience was sent interesting stories about life such as: "The value of vocational training", "Understanding freelancers correctly". The program had the participation of actors: Vu Thanh, Hong Trang, Hoang Hai, and psychology master Nguyen Hai Uyen.
Contributing to the program with a short story about a conversation between family members, actors Vu Thanh, Hong Trang, and Hoang Hai raised "hot" questions about choosing a career and starting a business: should you pursue a university degree or learn a practical trade?
The situation revolves around Hoang Hai – a young man who has just graduated from high school, facing the choice between going to university and learning a trade. While Hai’s father wants his son to continue studying at university to get a degree to work, Hai is determined to pursue his dream of becoming a chef. He turns to his grandfather – Vu Thanh as a “shield” to protect his intention, and at the same time receives support from his aunt Hong Trang, who believes in his innate talent for cooking. Hai also shares: “I want to be a chef first, if necessary, I will study further.”
Master of Psychology Nguyen Hai Uyen said that after graduating from high school, young people often have two choices: go to university or learn a trade, and the question "Which is better?" is always asked. According to Master Uyen, there is no absolutely superior choice, what is important is the suitability with the career and personal goals. "Better" here means more suitable, that is the key factor.
Master Uyen also emphasized: “After graduating from high school, the next path does not necessarily have to be university but should be seen as a process of 'vocational learning' - that is, learning a specific profession to serve future work. If the profession requires academic knowledge, theoretical elements or is only trained in a university environment, then you should go to university; on the contrary, if the profession can be developed from college, intermediate or vocational school, then this choice is completely suitable”. The Master also advised parents not to impose a single direction, but to observe their children's strengths and interests, then discuss together to choose the path that helps their children enter the profession in the most favorable way.
After Hai’s decision to learn a trade, the young man continued to surprise his family when he quit his job at the European restaurant to become a “freelancer”, pursuing freelance work. This decision caused concerns from his family about stability and the possibility of having to take on jobs outside his expertise due to economic pressure.
Master Nguyen Hai Uyen explains that a “freelancer” is a person who works independently, does not depend on any organization and manages their own work. They usually have a main job but are proactive about their time, completing tasks while also spending time with family and themselves. The advantage is that they can take on many jobs at the same time, choose their own work according to their interests and their income depends on the amount of work they receive. However, the disadvantage is that working hours are unstable, easily affecting health, income is uncertain and there is a lack of support from colleagues. The master advises young people to understand themselves, have a financial plan and build a career network to overcome difficulties when pursuing this form of work.
Vitamin Happiness is a family knowledge program presented through situational comedy skits. Each episode has a rich topic, providing useful knowledge about health, family education and common issues in society.
The program airs at 7:45 p.m., Monday to Saturday every week on THVL1 channel.
