Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online on the afternoon of April 17, a leader of the People's Committee of Son Binh commune (Tam Duong district, Lai Chau province) confirmed that an incident had just occurred in the area in which three people in a family were suspected of being poisoned by wild mushrooms, and one person has now died.
"A family of three fathers and sons are suspected of being poisoned by wild mushrooms. The father has been discharged from the hospital, the son is in a deep coma, and the daughter-in-law died last night," informed the leader of the People's Committee of Son Binh district.
According to the report of Tam Duong District Medical Center, at noon on April 10, at his family's cardamom farm, Mr. Sung A P. (46 years old, in Chu Va 8 village, Son Binh commune, Tam Duong district) and his son Sung A D. (21 years old) and daughter-in-law Giang Thi C. (18 years old) had lunch with mushroom soup (picked from the cardamom farm), chicken and white rice they brought themselves.
After dinner, at 10pm, Giang Thi C. had symptoms of stomach ache, nausea, and frequent loose stools.
Then, also on the night of April 10 to the morning of April 11, both Mr. Sung A D. and Mr. Sung A P. showed symptoms of headache, stomachache, nausea, and frequent loose stools.
At 6:07 p.m. the same day, the patients were taken to Tam Duong District Medical Center for examination and treatment.
After being hospitalized, Mr. Sung A P. was stable, alert, did not vomit, and did not have diarrhea. Mr. Sung A D. and his wife had to be transferred to the Provincial General Hospital for treatment on April 14.
At Lai Chau General Hospital, Ms. Giang Thi C. was diagnosed with acute liver failure suspected of being caused by mushroom poisoning/gastrointestinal bleeding. Mr. Sung A D. was diagnosed with acute liver failure suspected of being caused by mushroom poisoning. Both husband and wife were treated according to the hospital's treatment regimen.
After that, Mr. Sung A D. and his wife continued to be transferred to Bach Mai Hospital ( Hanoi ) for treatment.
"As of last night, April 16, Ms. Giàng Thị C. died, and Mr. Sùng A D. is in a deep coma" - the leader of the People's Committee of Son Binh commune informed.
Lai Chau Department of Health's Food Safety and Hygiene Department said that the initial investigation determined that the victims were suspected of mushroom poisoning.
The unit has sent samples to the National Institute of Food Safety and Hygiene for testing to determine the cause.
